I know there are differences depending on the airline and airport concerned, but is HEL and AY known as expensive airports/carriers to use?

exHEL to PEK/PVG/NRT/cough etc are pricing at A$204.30 tax plus 65,000 QFF according to the call centre tonight (QF website struggles to show AY J availability for some reason)

By contrast, AMS-HKG on CX is 78,000 QFF plus a mere €24.03 in taxes (about A$35) - how can there be such a wide discrepancy?

I could actually use the saving to fly CX and spend it on a hotel for a night in AMS (although the AMS redemption is an extra 13k QFF, and the CX J product is better than AY J anyway).

AY charges YQ on redemptions, though not as high as BA...

Any CX award flights to/from HKG do not have a fuel surcharge due to government regulations.

Does this explains why it cheaper to book 2 x one way QF classic award tickets SYD- HKG and then separately HKG - SYD than just booking a SYD - HKG - SYD ticket?
