Taxes one way vs. Return Qantas Dubai

I've booked a one way ex. Melbourne to Dubai and then continuing onto Nairobi with Emirates under a single booking. I then booked a return leg from Dubai to Melbourne when it became available.

My question is - the taxes for doing it this way seem to be very high (known as the time)... something like $1000 pp per leg. Any success likely if I have Qantas link the bookings? Particularly less taxes for the Dubai legs if they are considered return?

If you have two separate tickets, nothing that can be done.

Sometimes fees and charges are lower for a return booking. But you needed to either change your outbound by adding the return, or booking the whole thing again.

But those fees and charges you mentioned seem about right for Emirates these days. A way to check if they’d be lower for a return wouod be to do a dummy booking and see. They may not be any cheaper.
