For some reason I have been very negligent in getting this trip report done. It's been over a year that these folders of images have been sitting on my desk top. Time to bite the bullet and get it done.

Background - a dear friend of ours passed away 22 May 2013, as executors of his will, we promised him we would take his ashes to Iona in Scotland to be cast out and allowed to flow into the ocean. We did this 1 year later, then had ourselves a holiday.

For the Gaels, Iona is I Chaluim Chille - the isle of Colm Cille, an Irish priest and prince who was to become revered as Saint Columba. A tiny island, of typically Hebridean beauty, it holds a unique place in the story of Scotland and kindles the imagination of thousands who journey there each year. Yet it is also where people have lived, worked and worshipped over many centuries. To and from its shores have come monks and pilgrims, clan chiefs and kings, artists and craftsmen, farmers and fishermen.

This report will be based on the destinations, not the flights or accommodations, but for reference, we travelled in J, with QF to BKK, then AY to LHR. AY to HEL, then HKG. CX to SYD.

This report will cover - Bangkok, London, travelling to Iona, Iona, Staffa, Ireland, Skye, Outer Hebrides, John O'Groats, Orkney, Shetland Ils, driving back south thru UK via Bath & Cotswolds, Southhampton, cruise on Queen Victoria to Belgium & France, Helsinki, Tallin, Hong Kong.

So if any of these places interest you, keep reading.....

Some photos are grouped, others are single upload, depending on how much impact the image needed.

So, roughly in date order, first stop - Bangkok.

From London we took the train to Glasgow, Virgin rail first class. Wow, the prices can vary on these trains, but managed to get tickets for around 50 pounds each.
We worked out that by the time we travelled to the airport, check-in on time, wait, fly & transfer to our hotel, it would take the same amount of time to walk across the road to Euston Stn, get to our seats, and sit back and relax the whole way to Glasgow.

From Glasgow, we hired a car and drove to Oban for the first of our 30 odd boat rides due to the amount of Island hopping we would be doing on this trip.

Iona Abbey is the main point of interest on the Island, along with the museum next door.

At dawn on the 22 May 2014 we laid our friend to rest just behind the Abbey.

Later that day, 2 of us made the journey by boat to Isle of Staffa, The uninhabited island of Staffa includes the famous Fingal's Cave.Fingal’s Cave was immortalised by Mendelssohn in his Hebrides Overture, after he visited the island in 1829. The island’s distinctive six-sided columns of rock are formed from basalt, the same as the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. During spring and early summer, the cliffs and grassy slopes provide nesting sites for various seabirds including guillemots, razorbills and puffins.

All up 6 nights in Ireland, basically skirting around the edge of the island.

Ferry back to Cairnryan, and head north again to Fort William & Isle of Skye.

We started at the bottom of Skye at Armidale and worked our way to Uig, where we stayed for 2 nights.
One of the things I was most looking forward to, was our planned hike around the Cuillin Hills & Loch Coruisk.

First stop Elgol to get a boat across Loch Scavaig.

Another ferry, from Uig to Lochmaddy on North Uist.
We drove the length of the islands, but the weather was not on our side for these 2 days, so very few photos until we crossed over to Harris.

So much for the shortest distance between 2 places is a straight line....... Not so when traversing The Sound of Harris.

A tweed purchase is a must if you are on Harris.
