The Best Part of Flying?

Always remember the time i was upgraded at the gate to F on QF1 to LHR. Ian Sinclair (National Party) and his wife was on the plane and of course all the fuss was with them. On pushback the steward finally came arounfd to rest of us, and came to me saying i was not on his manifest. For some reason i just came out with "i'm really in economy class, but saw this seat empty and thought i would sit here". The reaction from the steward was red with rage, telling me to get back when we lifted off. When i explained i was upgraded at the gate, i was told "I do not like jokes, especially in the presence of senior Australian dignitaries". Funny thing was the other staff though it was a scream, and about two hours into the flight had the Captain come down, "so you're the guy that likes to joke with the staff?" he thought it was funny too.....

My hubby travelled Aeroflot in Europe sometime just post communism and there was no seatbelt in his seat. When he told a flight attendant they came back with a shot of vodka hahaha!

The rare times when I sit at the pointy end (rare and much relished). Also love landing and the push forward as the plane slows down. And then there's the opportunity to watch movies I've missed first time around. The anticipation when booking ... guess I love it all!!

I love the champagne toast with my other half at the start of another great trip!

We usually go away for about 2 months or more every year and try to fly Qantas .... I miss the Aussie sense of humour and really miss the Aussie accent when I'm away but as soon as I step foot on the QF and the FA welcomes me on board, I feel like I'm home. It truly brings a tear to my eyes ... I love that feeling ... that and getting back home safely !

Don't love the car picking me up for the return journey, but do love the Australian accents on boarding a QF flight for the long flight home. And everyone around me loving that also.

For me, that's one of the worst aspects of returning home. The Australian accents hit me like a ton of bricks - I feel like jumping straight off the plane. My wife feels the same way. To each their own!

I of course love all the obvious stuff, as I consider flying to be one of the biggest privileges of a "first-world" life, but I do have a small pleasure that I take all too rarely................

..........Opening the in-flight magazine and finding pristine, un-defaced, crosswords and sudokus.

Regards,
Peter

For me there's a small list: clicking the 'buy' option in the booking site, clearing immigration and security on the way out, turning left, take off, on a grey/wet day breaking through the clouds into the sunlight, getting to sleep on long haul flights, the promise of adventure on arrival in a foreign port.

The rare occasions when you find the stairs to the plane are the very wide ones with proper depth treads and a striped canopy on the top - especially getting off somewhere like Rome, I can imagine I'm an Italian film star and the paparazzi are at the bottom of the steps.

After dinner, getting into your Qantas jarmies, and with a full glass of champers in hand, wandering down the back to see how the less fortunate are faring .....but I'm always terrified I will be pelted with plastic cups, glasses and bottles

If you go looking for trouble you are bound to find it! ;)

Some have said when you head out from home on an adventure that has been months, sometimes years, in the planning is a great feeling. Personally, I feel tense until I have checked-in, dropped the bags and cleared security and customs. Then I start to feel the excitement replace the tension as I head for the lounge and that first champers of the trip.

Come on back. I promise I won't throw the bottle too hard ;):p

I especially like the departure flight:
On take-off, the excitement of a new adventure.
When cruising, the feeling of being 40,000 feet above most other things in the world, just slightly removed from the everyday events going on below.

On landing, the anticipation of putting all the organising to the test at a new destination.

But on the return flight, it's just great to come home...

Technically I have that slightly nervous feeling right up until I'm checked in at the hotel at the other side, doesn't mean I don't very much so enjoy the trip, but I am aware that there are multiple steps along the way that months of careful planning could go astray eg...

- Customs (outbound) decides my passport is no longer valid and won't let me leave the country (I know someone who had this happen. It was a mistake made by immi on their DB, but needless to say it screwed up his travel plans)
- The Airline or Customs (inbound) decides I have the wrong visa, or I'm attempting to do visa-less travel when in fact I need one.
- The car hire place does not have my booking or does not accept my card (I've had this happen to me, luckily the first time it was arranged through work so I called up my boss and said "fix it", the second time I said thank you very much, walked out, caught the bus back to LAX, and hoped on the next car hire bus I saw)
- The hotel won't accept my card (had this happen as well, luckily I was able to get them to take a deposit)
- My chosen method of getting money does not work, or does not work as widely as I expected (eg driving around multiple servo's in Anaheim looking for an ATM which will accept my AU card, not much fun)

Of course, even with the multiple points where things could go astray, I still absolutely love every minute of travel, and always consider it an adventure.

all this talk makes me want to book a million flights for right now!

I love the potential of each flight especially overseas.

I do love seeing sydney when I come home - i want to cry I love it so much!
