Many restaurants are now "Fully licensed, no BYO", meaning patrons are stuck with their [often overpriced] wine list.

The idea behind this thread is to create a list of restaurants in Australian cities which offer great food, and affordable corkage for BYO. I'm not sure if an internet forum, or perhaps a wiki is a better way to do this, but here goes.

Great thread, Penegal.

I am a Sydneysider and don't have much good experience of BYO restaurants - but that might have something to do with a young family and a busy job!

When selecting the venue for the Sydney AFF Wine Lovers January Meet Up, I have been using Zomato: https://www.zomato.com/ It has got a great search functionality, a BYO filter, and lots and lots of reviews, which is good.

I also see our good friend, RedBigot also has a thread on his site about BYO restaurants. I hope he doesn't mind me posting the Google link that came up when I did a search: Recommended BYO

I will be watching this thread with interest, and then frantically looking for a matching babysitter website if a little [Sydney] gem does come up ... !

Good thread! I'm always happy to support good restaurants that allow BYO.

Last night we had dinner at Deer Duck Bistro in Milton (1 hat) which allows BYO and has proper glassware for different types of wine.

I feel for you Wozza as I'm in the same boat. Instead of eating out a couple of times a week we now struggle to get to a restaurant once every few months!

Steak Ministry in Melbourne (Glen Waverley) has a very impressive wine list, but on Mondays you can byo for $10 a bottle.

I don't mind, but the page is a fair bit out of date, apart from Canberra.

There are some links in there to other sites that have listings of byo restaurants and reviews in some cases.

BistrodeCBD in Sydney. $10 per bottle and decent food. My mate and I go there every time he ticks over another million credit card points...thankfully that's multiple times per year.

I dined here late last year for a good friend's birthday and brought two bottles. Certainly not the cheapest place in this thread, but the food and service were both excellent. I actually really like little rustic places like this.

Chez Oliver (French) - $15 per bottle (Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday ONLY)
121 Greville St, Prahran VIC 3181 Chez Olivier | French Restaurant Melbourne, Australia

"Sunday to Thursday at Chez Olivier are our cellar nights. On these nights you can bring that special bottle to match with our food. $15 corkage per bottle applies and you will be able to put your bottle on our wall of fame."

For those playing at home they are also a Dimmi restaurant so you can earn QF pesos, and also accept the Entertainment Book Gold Card.

This was one of my Sydney gems. I had a number of reasonably priced, and quite enjoyable meals here. Each meal involved a special wine from my cellar, or that of my fellow diners.

Unfortunately some sad news regarding BistrodeCBD earlier this year. Jeremy Strode (the executive chef and namesake) took his own life in July, and the decision was made to close the restaurant in September.

The space will play host to a new restaurant in the new year. No indication of whether it will be BYO or not.

Ripples at Chowder Bay (Sydney) has a great view, good food (I was pleasantly surprised how good) and BYO @ $10/btl

Wozza introduced this one to me at Chowder Bay. ( love it ) . Their Milsons Point restaurant (next to North Sydney Pool ) is also great with an awesome view..$12 per bottle

How was it?

I've found a new BYO restaurant in the Sydney CBD that I'd recommend, having gone twice this month:

(no title)

The Local Eatery serves honest, mostly Italian food. It's $5 corkage, and the food is well priced. We've had two group bookings, spending around the $50 a head mark, including 10% tip and extras. It's just opposite the entrance to the Harbour Bridge on Kent Street, so its only a 5 minute walk from Wynyard Station. They allow a max of one bottle per person, and are happy if you want to bring your own stemware (theirs is standard restaurant grade, so not suitable for the fancy wines). The $33 a head banquet is perfect for a group booking.

If you are after something more fancy, then a group of us recently went to Otto:

Fine Dining Italian Restaurant | OTTO Ristorante Sydney

Until the end of June they have a set BYO menu for a minimum of 8 people at $89 a head. It's located on Woolloomooloo Wharf, with wonderful views of the city and marina. The food was excellent, as was the service and care taken over the wines. Definitely recommend this for a special occasion.
