The C word, R U OK?

I agree with the impact of coronavirus on the vulnerable, and the tragic deaths that have resulted from that but if you believe that coronavirus kills more people than influenza (in terms of absolute numbers) then it's you who is in denial at this point.
While I do agree with a lot of what you wrote I would appreciate it if you read my post after I wrote that one instead of cherry picking, I clearly wrote:
"Raw numbers yes the flu does kill more people and is serious in its own right but people using that as a way to downplay the seriousness of another virus is what I take issue with."

So I am far from in denail, although thanks for making me feel not OK in an R u OK thread.

My mother had a bit of a breakdown last night, she will be starting WFH today and I think has realised that she won't be getting much social time in the coming months.

Possibly not seeing me or the grand child either.

Tough times ahead :(

Very grateful that our doctor is doing the phone call "visits'
We fit the requirements of it in a few ways .
That does help
Definitely am advantage to seeing a doctor consistently and having a local pharmac_ that one uses for all medications including the dog's

Noticing more offices closing/not allowing in office appts. Lots of skype/phone. We have a meeting Monday and expecting it'll be work from home except frontline services.

Stressing a little as I haven't got the financial buffer I usually have, have had a bit of self-mismanagement over the last few months. But, at this stage if I WFH the money will still keep rolling in and I'll be fine.

Right? Glad to have this forum and others to have a place to vent. <3

I do feel for a lot of people who cant or dont have the ability to work from home.

Us on the other hand where I work, we are 100% setup to work from home but still no go ahead from the company to do so. I can see us waiting till we have an active case in the office before they finally say ok all you can WFH now - very annoying.

Will reach the magical age in a few months where most travel insurance doesn't want to know me. Also definitely in the age range where the C word has a propensity to terminate a not insignificant percentage. I have resolved to being extra careful with my movements/interactions for a few months and self isolating at home and in the nearby park for walks wherever possible.

I am not sick but need a new script and the also results of my regular blood tests necessitating a consult with my GP and specialist. However, in the current environment I don't want to be sitting around in a reception room for up to an hour with a lot of sick people. Also not keen on travelling on pubic transport 4 times to get there and back.

Rang both my GP and specialist and requested over the phone appointments which were granted immediately without any fuss at all. Very happy. They will ring me at the appointed time on my registered mobile.

The new medicare claim items have come in very handy not having to do face to face any more.

Still getting ready to leave Thailand on Friday when i got an sms saying QF28 was cancelled and they would get back shortly. Must admit it hit hard after all the calls "to come home". waited a few minutes then called QF and i have to say they were superb. As the lady (who i feel really dumb that i forgot her name now to thank) was trying a re-route she was overridden in the system as they booked me J BKK-SYD-MEL. The voice waived a bit and it was great to hear.

So hats off to QF, really well done in probably the most stressful time for them. I know i and others have been a bit scathing on some of the service, but they really stepped up last night. Thank you.

There's a bit of confusion somewhere in the system r.e. timing as I was posting from the USA and your 2nd post wasn't available / visible to me at the time when I replied, hence I wasn't actually cherry-picking.

I perhaps took the wrong approach / wrong wording to making my point, and my apologies for that. My point is that both CV and flu can be serious to the vulnerable, but the numbers currently demonstrate that the startlingly-different public viewpoints on flu vs. coronavirus make no logical sense. Do we try to slow the spread of CV to buy time for vaccines to be developed? Absolutely. Do we do our utmost to protect the most vulnerable? Again, absolutely. Is the hysteria and panic around CV justified? As far as I can see, mostly not. As a nation and more broadly, we should take the actions I've just mentioned, but let's all relax a little and view it closer to flu than to armageddon......

Stay safe and well, and hopefully all will be resolved as soon as possible

To those who think flu is just another cold I beg to differ.2 years ago I worked on a ward that was turned into a flu ward. When you see a pregnant woman in her 20s die of the disease (she was in ICU) then you no longer think of it as a minor irritation.
If ever the H5N1 strain becomes a pandemic it would be way worse than this corona virus.

That's right.from the WHO figures up to 60% mortality.

Anyone who thinks the flu is the same as the common cold has obviously never had it.

I have had the flu once in my lifetime and wanted to off myself, wouldnt wish that on anyone.

I have had the misfortune to have twice.
It was horrendous and the second time I truly thought I would die

We're signing a contract this afternoon to build our house. Scary and exciting enough in regular times, a little more emphasis on scary in the current time. I think we'll be fine, but who knows what could happen? So there's some stress and anxiety from that corner.

That's probably my biggest issue at the moment, what will happen with mortgages, banks, etc, etc.

The news yesterday about the banks offering to defer loans for 6 months was very welcome. Our landlord has already called us and said if we have any problems, we can sort it out later. Our photo business is showing no signs of any ill effects, in fact, sales are increasing at the moment!!!
By the way, if anyone reading this is in retail, you can also apply to banks to waive EFTPOS fees - this came from our ANZ manager yesterday.
I'm of 2 minds about closing the schools - one side says the government is right. My retail side says send the kids home and they will go out and take photos!!!!! I know it's not the "right" attitude, but kids are shooting film like it's going out of style, and that is what is growing our business.
We have a huge backlog of scanning work/video transfer work which will keep us going for the next 3 weeks easily, and we have done things to our website for online ordering.
We can "self isolate" staff on different floors of the building so assuming they can get into the shop, we can keep going if it gets really bad.
I'm even doing some new radio ads at home on my phone (the radio station is in lockdown) and we are going to use the home recording to add something extra to the ad.
If we can avoid a total mandatory shut down, I'm feeling far more positive at present.
As for travel, we are holding off on anything, but we would think of domestic as there are some hot deals on accommodation at present.

Totally agree, I had Swine flu early this century, properly diagnosed and treated, I didn't fully recover for several months.

I've also caught the flu the last two seasons despite having the vaccine as early as possible. I was so sick even my (very limited) hair hurt.

My GP now gives me the current vaccine for free because I get too sick and really need to avoid catching it.

Ok husband is applying to have home delivery from Woolies .
Let's hope he is approved .
Otherwise it think it will be an air tasker
Just won't take the risk with him getting it
Have to say the news becomes worse daily with very minimal postive aspects.
I feel for people who have anxiety disorders .
I don't have such disorders and I am being overwhelmed by the news ....couldn't imagine how bad it is for them

And I have a box ready to bring into you and hoping to get a few more sorted while I'm socially distancing myself - if you've got a backlog I won't rush in
