UK likely has herd immunity because covid went rampant. Maybe we just should have engaged in a Darwin theory and got it over and done with last year. Shame on you for berating someone who wants to see their family having already missed some of their family members important events. Family is all we have.

I think that is way too pessimistic - I was quite happy with the targets and to be honest can’t see how they can be anything less.

EDIT remember lots of Pfizer coming in Q4 and a much shorter time frame to get fully vaccinated.

At the current daily rate, Australia could reach 80% in 17.5 weeks.

I like to think I can be optimistic, but 80% fully vaccinated later this year is a stretch when other nations haven‘t hit that mark.

People have had plenty of time to get their first dose, so if they want to hit the targets quickly they need to provide both carrot and stick now or imminently.

As I have said before, it is more selfish to refuse to promptly vaccinate when you have an opportunity than to want to see one's family in a 2 year period.

Someone fully vaccinated who has been in a highly vaccinated country the last 14 days and tests negative prior to departure home, poses almost no risk if they do home quarantine. Not advocating for flying home and immediately mixing in the community as if there’s no COVID, but this plan doesn’t even try to find a sensible middle ground between now and going back to normal in anything like a reasonable timeframe.

71 % in the UK fully vaccinated and nearly 90% with a first jab, so they will be reaching that quite soon.

while I think it’s terrific that you went and got AZ, you can’t blame people for listening to the advice and waiting for Pfizer. Especially with people like the Queensland CHO being so adamant about under 60s not getting AZ.

so our main holdup at the moment is still lack of supply and that will increase and more of the younger people are coming forward for AZ.

I think in 2 months time the picture will be clearer and easier to predict how long it will take. The Q4 increase in Pfizer will be a game changer as well.

Look on the bright side - at least it’s not the 95% figure people were throwing around, or of the whole population.

We already have 40% with one jab and that is going to translate into 40% fully vaccinated quite quickly.

We are all different with different needs and none are better nor worse than others. Unlike you, many need to physically connect with their family as often as possible. Likely you are so much younger than me. I've been through a life threatening issue and still have challenges. I have a high risk of stroke. Or brain bleed from the medication I take to prevent that. I don't have years of overseas travel left in me where I can be safely insured. Two years have been removed because of Covid. I don't know if I can't take another year.

One of my charities is the stroke foundation. It needs to find more answers for many.

It’s hard - Mr FM and I are talking ourselves into the idea we may never travel again. I have had a stroke, also on blood thinners. Was just starting to resolve how to get travel insurance when COVID hit. Went to the USA in May 2019 without pre existing condition insurance and just crossed my fingers and hoped. But it will all resolve - at least we know what the goal posts are. Everyone just needs to advocate with everyone they know or even vaguely come across to get vaccinated….

It’s 80% of eligible not 80% of population so other countries (eg the UK) HAVE met this mark. It’s all about how you define eligible!

Bloody disastrous plan. And even then McGowan wants to have his lockdowns. I’m really hoping for some serious pushback. Pollies and public servants can start with a 40% wage cut only to be rolled back when 80% are vaccinated.

And with increasing supply and delivery mechanisms (e.g. pharmacies): we could actually do a fair bit better than that.

2 issues 1. to keep people coming forward as we start scraping the barrel
2. Some states are at the slower end now and may not necessarily accelerate with the others

Woolworths just started that there're advocating all staff to get vaccinated, setting up a hub in Sydney LGA areas of distress.
Also giving all staff upto 8 hours paid leave to get the jab.

It's this type of movement & positivity from large corps that will get the critical %% heading north.
