The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

I know you're being facetious, but I understand this person is actually on track to "win a prize" in early November.. 🤔
As someone watching this from afar I cannot understand why a state health officer who contradicts federal, and for that matter global, medical advice is not being charged with gross negligence.

Just a hypothetical question,

I don't think we should be heading down this path of calling people morons/anti-vaxers etc etc, who don't want to get a vaccine shot for a virus that has a 99% survival rate for under 50's. Next we'll be forcing people who don't want the jab to wear a star....

I like the Florida approach.

If you want to wear a mask, wear one. If not, don't
If you want the jab, get one. If not, don't

What happened to personal freedom?

I've had two Pfizer jabs. I'm not going to force it onto anyone else. I believe in personal freedoms.

Cool good for you and I agree.

I’m more than happy for them to make the choice not to get vaccinated - unvaccinated people can have the freedom to fly different airlines that will accept them, not attend shows where they may be next to someone they may hurt etc.

They will absolutely have personal freedom. No issue with that!

NSW has had probably close to 10,000 Covid-19 cases in the last 2 weeks (the true number is probably 5 fold). How many deaths? 20?

Should NSW totally wreck their economy for a virus with less than a 1% death rate? Sure, vaccinate people over 65 or with underlying health issues, then let it rip.

As the sayings go -

"Divide and conquer"
+
"History repeats itself"

Why am l saying this? Because 20+ friends and relatives in Europe/South America have had Covid-19, and some of them didn't even know they had it, others just had flu like symptoms, 2 deaths - who were over 70.

99% survival rate hides a lot, what it hides is people who are surviving with severely reduced quality of life, placing an unnecessary burden on family and the medical system. It’s hiding the fact that the unvaccinated are clogging up hospitals around the world, denying people with otherwise curable conditions access to treatment and condemning them to worse outcomes and deaths than would otherwise have been avoidable.

Not getting vaxxed is entirely selfish, it has nothing to do with individual freedom. Vaccination is is about collective responsibility, it’s about caring for our fellow human beings.

@Oneworldplus2

this Reddit thread is slightly tangential because the original question is about who survives after going on a ventilator, but it does give some insight into the scale of the problem in the US, hospitals are full of people who have exercised their ‘freedom’ not to be vaxxed and they are dying needless, senseless deaths, leaving behind families and taking valuable medical resources from others.

Fine !
But you need to balance the other costs .

The current plan is to let it rip but not till you mitigate the costs by improving survival and morbidity with vaccination.
The original plan (without vaccination ) was to flatten the curve without overwhelming the health system.

I don't think you appreciate how much we need a functioning health system and the costs of it being partially disabled.

A lot I’d imagine. It even appeared on the Covid Drs Facebook group 🙈

Evidently the booking link worked, and worked with the proper filters. So ineligible people were able to book and that is now being addressed.

Also appointments for inelligible 12-15 year olds occurred, which is also being addressed.

Part of today's email from the AMA.A no fault vaccine indemnity policy has been signed off.

The Federal Government today adopted the AMA's proposal for a national no-fault COVID-19 vaccination indemnity scheme.

While full detail of the scheme is yet to be published, my discussions with Minister Hunt confirm the no-fault scheme will provide Federal Government funded indemnity to benefit patients and doctors alike.

The AMA fought very hard for this no-fault approach.

Under the new scheme, an injured patient will be able to apply to Services Australia for Federal Government funded compensation. An expert panel will assess the veracity of the claim and determine common law equivalent compensation fully funded by government.

The no-fault scheme will be retrospective and provide patients with an alternative to court, minimising litigation involving patients, doctors, and doctors’ insurers.

I know the echo chamber probably all know this, but it starting to irk me more when a State leader fudges things to say 50% of the population has had one dose when its actually 50% of the eligible 16+ population.....now spilling over into mass media reports........"misinformation"

Well it’s the votes of those 18+ at the time of the next election that matter for the election results. As the fully vaccinated percentage for 16+ increases the pressure on politicians to open up will increase as people demand their freedoms back.

I have heard that some people over 18 have these things called children and might be concerned about a small but significant risk of their children needlessly catching a virus with a small risk of long term consequences.

I do know from talking to my American friends that many are furious about the compromises to their children’s safety that are being forced on them to send their kids back to school. We aren’t in the same place in Australia but all of the parents I know here are keen to get their kids protected before we let the virus rip.

Relax. I would be very surprised if I can go overseas, come home and head straight from the airport to a packed MCG anytime in the next few years and probably much longer than that. The plans to open up are not to let it rip.

We have to learn to live with the virus at some point. If we keep on putting things off we’ll always find another reason not to open up.

The children 12 and up that are vulnerable with co-morbidities are already eligible. If a kid is not already very sick with something else they are pretty much certain to survive COVID-19. The biggest risk for kids catching COVID in most cases is passing it on to their non-vaccinated adult relatives and friends and others they come into contact with.

Many kids will have at least one dose before we reach the adult targets.

If the government can secure additional supply over and above current forecasts or bring supplies from next year forward it may enable them to vaccinate significantly more children than anticipated before opening up.

Regrettably there is no approved vaccine anywhere in the world for children below 12.

We have a choice to make then. Do we continue with our current settings while that happens or open up?

I doubt any of the parents concerned were volunteering for the phase 1 trials to speed things up.

Over 1/3 of 16+ fully vaccinated and nearly 50% of 50+.

65-69 is the latest age group to pass 1 million first doses and at 79.9% with a first dose is ever so close to 80%

Every age group 55-59 and up has reached 70% with a first dose.

Every age group 45-49 and up has over 40% fully vaccinated. Soon (in the next day or two) it will be 40-44 and up.

WA is the latest and last state to pass 30% fully vaccinated for 16+.

VIC is just under 1/3 of 16+ fully vaccinated, has gone past 50% of 50+ and 60% of 70+.

Sadly not hitting 2m jab per week in Australia - possibly only a couple of weeks to hit it because soon after NSW might hit a wall around 85-90%. Maybe need a 12-15 surge come 13 September

A paediatrician and immunologist at a leading NSW hospital was asked this last week. His comment was that young children barely develop symptoms but with Delta can pass it on. Of course there is no absolute guarantee that every child will be perfectly fine. Just as we can't guarantee that a severe but common respiratory infection won't develop into something worse like pneumonia. He was not concerned that children under 12 were not, as yet, going to be vaccinated.

Seems like a majority of Australians are onboard with mandatory vaccinations for people in high risk jobs.

Also 82% of people agree with the vaccination passport to be used to block people who won’t get vaccinated from offices, hospitality venues etc.

This is good news as it indicates a vast majority intend to get vaccinated as w

Majority of voters back vaccine passports, mandatory jabs for high-risk workers

More than two-thirds of Australians support vaccine passports, mandatory jabs for high-risk workers and locking people out of workplaces and hospitality venues if they refuse to get the jab, political correspondent James Massola reports today.

Vaccine passports and in some sectors mandatory vaccinations are shaping as a key element of the path out of lockdowns and a return to normal life, and an exclusive Resolve Political Monitor survey for The Sun-Herald and The Sunday Ageindicates majority support for such moves.

The poll found 82 per cent of people agreed or strongly agreed that “high-risk occupations, like aged care or quarantine, should require workers to be vaccinated”. Aged care workers will need to have at least one jab from September 17, while in NSW it will be mandatory for teachers from November.
