The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Australia has begun

Well we're looking at the very real prospect that every age group 12-15 and up could be past 80% fully vaccinated come the end of next month in Victoria and the 35-39 and up age groups with the possible exception of the 95+ age group may be past 90% double dose by then along with the overall average of the 12+ population. In December vaccination levels may go about as far as they are going to go in VIC for the first two doses for 12+ meaning that doses given will be almost entirely boosters starting at some point in December. Though if under 12 kids are added there'll be a lot of doses to give for them.

Oh dear :(

Really feel for them, at least here in QLD we have a hard opening date which will hopefully drive a last minute vaccination rush…

Anti-vaxxers in control of WA state border as vaccination program struggles

Frustration is growing in WA as vaccinated residents are being left behind because anti-vaxxers haven’t got the jab.

Support for WA Premier Mark McGowan’s hard border stance is falling in the lead up to Christmas with vaccinated Western Australians frustrated at the prospect of receiving a third Covid-19 jab before they’re allowed free movement across the state line.

It could mean a situation where West Australians are still locked inside the state while triple-dosed.

Perth resident Emma Wynne said vaccinated West Australians “have seen no benefit” from doing the right thing because anti-vaxxers are keeping the state border shut.

“Three months today since I got my second jab. By January 27, I will eligible for a booster and WA borders will probably still be closed,” she said.

“In WA, people who went out and got the vaccination as soon as they could have seen no benefit while the delayers and anti-vaxxers are in control of the timetable. Great strategy.”

That's a sad state of affairs.

Totally crazy that residents with boosters can't jump over a domestic border, oh my!

While others going to US & Europe.

Vaccination rate has slowed in Vic this week. Some slowing was expected, plus the extra catch-up doses that arrived in late Sept to mid Oct will have all been deployed by now.

49,695 second doses in Vic on Weds (reported today).

118,067 second does required on Thu and Fri to reach 80% second doses for 16+

So at the 6PM Friday change to 80% restriction levels Vic may be a just little short of actually being at 80% second doses.

First dose rate now at 91.28%. Second doses at 77.82%. ie Reported today for Weds.

12-15 reached 79.53% for first doses yesterday. So most likely will be over 80% sometime today.

Managed to pickup a booster Pfizer after a bit of backwards and forwards. My doctor is throwing out about 500 doses on Sunday. Apparently it’s becoming quite commonplace

That's one of the flaws in the GP model, they dont have the customers to use the doses they over order, the mass vax centres don't throw out that sort of volume.

Please post citations or quotes, just like the other thread where you were corrected again after trying to provide vaccine ‘advice’ again - if you don’t understand the topic just don’t post or perhaps ask a question instead.

Now to facts to address the OP and I’m working with the vaccine rollout as everyone knows.

There is a sizeable batch of Pfizer expiring at the end of October, Australia wide, regardless of what channel. There will be a significant dumping event regardless of where it is sitting.

The fact we are wasting vaccine (again) is feels terrible but it does happen. Every country will have expired vaccine.

Please stop posting incorrect information, someone might believe you.

Its not incorrect information, if doses are kept at the proper temperature in super cold storage until needed they last months longer than they do in a GP fridge. Better management would see supply to premises without capability to store for more than a few days tightly limited, i.e. prove you have appointments before giving stock, dont send hundreds of doses if they dont have hundreds of patients lined up.

We have had a huge volume of Pfizer and Moderna doses arrive in Aus since September, none of which would expire or be wasted if the logistics had been better managed, a dose in a gp or pharmac_ fridge without a confirmed recipient (not booked) is a waste of tax payer dollars. Had that same dose been held back at storage centre until it was booked, it would not have been.

The mass vax centres had wait lists, they were not short of takers, makes managing when you defrost doses much easier to manage to reduce waste. Small operators should not be given more stock if they are throwing out material volumes of unused doses, as its clear they dont have the customer base to use it when required.

Fact is we would waste far less vaccine, if logistics were improved. Excess could be donated not binned.

There is tons of excess vaccine around the country at all channels and unfortunately some will go to waste as its just not logistically possible to save it all

But was/is possible to save much more. The cold chain storage requirements were well understood.

Some figures for doses delivered on Thursday 28th Oct are out already (the official Commonwealth will be after lunch):

Evidently the storms of last night/early this morning in Victoria have closed, or interfered with the operation of some of, the vaccination sites and so it would now be most unlikely to hit the required 67,595 doses to reach 80% second doses today. Will quite possibly be under 50K.

It will most likely go past 80% second dose on Saturday 30th rather than as originally hoped today.

Great deflection away from your personally biased and incorrect original post. Not going to bother responding again.

Just don’t post false information around vaccines again, please. You’ve been corrected twice by myself and others around incorrect information in the last 24 hours.

Ensuring that we get to the point where supply exceeds demand was always the plan with the rollout. It means the booster rollout can scale up without stopping people from getting their first two doses.

How long does a normal Pfizer last in storage?

I’m guessing the expiring Pfizer are Poland purchase, or one of the other swaps Australia agreed to.

Surely the Poland Pfizer is in arms by now, wasn't it only 500k, most went to Sydney. Ah my home country helping us down under, ha!

If there's excess Pfizer as posted above, why don't they open it up to anybody 6months on since last jab. The state hubs still open, let's keep ppl flowing through them.
Think I heard Scomo say we've got plenty for everybody booster............let's go, roll baby roll it out.

I have not posted any false vaccine information and and you are not qualified to correct my posts. The approved vaccine for boosters in Australia is Pfizer. Nothing to correct.

The booster roll-out starts on 1 Nov, so this will happen. The first few weeks is being prioritized for Medical Workers and Aged Care residents but then anyone who can show 6 month gap from dose 2 can get jabbed.

The excess held in proper super cold storage will hopefully go primarily to the hubs for boosters, for quick dispensing. As previously stated previously we got a glut of Pfizer and Moderna in Sept and Oct with more to come in Nov and Dec). If stored properly the earliest should expire is March 2022 (for the Sept doses)

The problem is if GPs and Pharmacies have unused doses they have been stored in normal refrigeration which means they expire more quickly and if not enough takers get binned.

I believe the shelf life of Pfizer and Moderna is six months.
Of course, once they are thawed, that life decreases substantially.
