Some of the country side coming into Goondiwindi was pretty lush.

A major crop in the district is cotton.mrsdrron wanted to visit this place as she has bought clothes there before.

Sasdly not this time so to the motel-the Town House Motor Inn.Pretty standard.Out of interest we booked all our accommodation directly with the property and most times cheaper than the OTAs.Never dearer.

The restaurant was closed but there was room service.Mrsdrron had the barramundi and I had a steak.basically meat and 3 veg but done properly and reasonably priced.

After checking into the motel we went for a walk up and down the main street.

The old Town Hall is an art Deco design from the late 30's.It now houses the library and a small, free Gunsynd Museum.

Mrsdrron then went back to the hotel and I continued down to the river.A delightful stroll along the river.the area has been done up well.On the way passed the local museum but it was closed.

Drron this may be a silly question but why would they need a customs house in Goondawindi? As far as I recall it's in the middle of Woop Woop

Goondiwindi is on the McIntyre River, which forms the border between Qld and NSW in that part of the country. When the Customs House was originally established (~1860-ish, IIRC), Qld was a newly formed colony in its own right. Customs and duties were payable on trade between the colonies. Hence the need for a customs house.

As with many river towns in Australia Goondiwindi has been subjected to flooding. In 1956 the Council Engineer was asked to devise a flood mitigation plan.1956 was a significant year for floods with a previous base in Maitland becoming a major story that year for flooding. An 8Km levee was completed in 1958.

The sign mentioned on the board.

A previous flood and the bridge this month.

The bridge must have been at the site of the first crossing as very close to the custom's house and just up the road this pub.

"First pub in Queensland."
While i was in this area a fellow walked across the bridge from NSW and headed for town. The road was blocked to traffic but easy for a pedestrian to get past.

We had a detour to Thallon.our GPS took us a quicker way.just 40Km of unsealed road.

But we did see our first glimpse of what had enticed us to detour.

I think after we've emerged from lockdown, and with international air travel stymied for some considerable time, we'll set about exploring Oz, and get a new appreciation of what a beautiful and interesting country we live in. Even for those who've travelled quite a bit there's surely still heaps to look at. Enjoying this TR

Just a short run to St.George for a fuel stop and lunch.nothing interesting open so a healthy lunch. An apple each and shared a mandarin washed down by water.
The Town Hall.
