FWIW, I use a Roll-On Deodorant. It come in 50ml bottles similar to this:
There are several brands available in that same size. Check out your local super market for one that smells better than a travel-hardened road warrior.

Hmm - I might need to test the liquids limits -I hadn't concerned myself re that yet...

Another tip is that I generally carry a lightweight folding bag.

It folds flat about A4 size and expands to about 20 litres (16x30x40cm). I estimate it weights about 100 grams.

Very useful for lot of things. e.g.
  • A "Daypack"
  • carrying those last segment bottles of D/F grog.
  • I have also found it useful when flying in WHY on Qantas 747's. I'm normally in an aisle exit row which has no storage within easy reach. I place the bag near my feet after takeoff and keep papers, books, headphones etc in it.

Interestingly, this bag was given to me by the agent at F check-in in LAX T4 last year when with my 105cm (41") rollaboard and laptop bag. (Traveling WHY back to SYD.) The laptop bag was not deemed to be a personal item, whereas the 20 litre bag they gave me was ok. I had to do some repacking and check my rollaboard.

In the store adjacent the old F longe (gate 24) they sell miniture cans of spray Rexona aerosol deoderant, 50mls or similiar, the only issue is they really only last a few days, but they take up less room in the clear liquids bag. Last trip I took the same sort of thing as Serfty.... for me the spray works better, really noticed it in the asian heat.

Here's an interesting web site I came across on FT this morning ...

Step-by-Step PackingLight Method

Step-by-Step PackingLight Method

PackingLight believes you can pack your essentials for most of your travels in either a twenty-two or twenty-four inch pullman or backpack and a companion tote. Our packing plan is to leave your set of luggage behind and travel with one manageable main bag carrying attire. A second smaller tote or pack carries necessities other than garments such as toiletries, maps, accessories, reading materials, purses or fanny packs and assorted odds and ends.

Interesting site.

Just curious also about shoe polish. It is not specifically referred to anywhere wrt the liquids rule so ssume that this is OK in carry on luggage?
All shoe polish I have I seen is either a liquid or a paste, so is there a need to specifically mention it in the rules? I though most country's rules are fairly clear about it applying to all liquids, gels and pastes - although some do not mention the pastes any more.

True, but I have seen reference to just about every other type of liquid / paste / gel that a traveller might be carrying, but never shoe polish. Just curious what other people's experiences are.

I guess when in doubt though take the cautious approach and treat as any other liquid, etc.

I put my Vegemite into my "nasties" bag when travelling - and some folks from the LOTFAP have suggested it is like boot polish.

In fact, last year last year I arranged a "Mythbusters" theme for a fathers night at an organisation I am associated with, and one of the Myths we looked at was the American view on Vegemite, with one being that it really boot polish and another being that it is really axle grease. We concluded that the boot polish myth was plausible after having people polishing some old boots with both "Kiwi" brand shoe polish and Vegemite. We also concluded that if you used a real Vegemite sandwich from your school lunchbox to polish your school shoes, the butter can help to give a better shine!

I wouldn't bother.

Thoroughly clean and shine your shoes before you depart. Make use of the shoe shine kits/cloths/saches the are provided In most hotels.

Call me un-Australian but I would rather eat the boot polish than the vegemite :p

Speak for yourself, I polish my shoes nearly daily, sometimes twice a day. I feel a bit OCD, but its better than alternative.

Packing commences in the morning - I will summarise what I manage and commence the challenge!

I am not making this easy with gifts, multiple ties, cufflinks... oh an dflying into the middle of a Typhoon...

What's the alternative? Using a Vegemite Sandwich to polish the shoes?

Now I just wish I could convince the kids to polish their school shoes at least once per term  .
