What's the alternative?

A tap on the shoulder at security by 2 burley security guards carring guns and handcuffs, a missed connection, and or no luggage (checked or carryon) at all. :(

Ties can also come in handy as shoe shining rags or handkerchiefs when desperate.

Or taking care of painful customers and associates:D

Well the ties were put in the shoes - so no additional sapce consumed ;)

For me part of the thing about the tie is that it gives me focus - it is like Arnie in Commando setting the knives and guns into his flak jacket. From that point I am not "in the zone".

I made some silly decisions though - keeping the garment bag this was not necessary - I was able to put my toiletries in it after security rather than squeezing further my Tumi.

So far so good :)
Good stuff simon. My packing trial is tomorrow, but will have less than you (although contemplating a second pair of shoes as I will spend a few days walking through factories so may get a bit ripe )

Interesting thread with some unusual ideas.

Even with my recent experience I would not be attempting any hand luggage only trips unless it was just for a few days. Next time I will be a little smarter and keep a few more shirts, trousers and undergarments in my carry on just in case....

Currently in NRT and feel decidedly liberated :)

Although I am thinking my shopping in NYC might be curtailed slightly...

So apart from the Tumi, did you have any other carry-on luggage?

Yes - my small garment bag - I might dump this and replace with a Tumi trifold that slips over the tumi handle when In NY

Why would you take the F PJs? If you are flying F then they will give you them ( I have yet to remove them from cellophane when I fly :) ) and if not in F, isn't it a bit odd to be wearing them anyway?

Dave
A moot point now, but a pair of F PJ's is something I find extremely useful, especially when overnighting on an aircraft. I use a pair of the dark navy blue ones from the late 90's and have no issue in using them when travelling - whether in F, J or WHY. These are somewhat lighter and less bulky than those issued these days, so they take up very little space.

Of course, if most of your flights are in F anyway, there is really no need.

Actually, that's another point, a little off the topic. When I travel with checked luggage, I always assume my luggage might be lost, so I travel with something warm on the plane (if I'm going through cold climates) and deodorant . I can normally survive otherwise, but -5degC with a shirt only is not nice. Washing under the arms of shirts, socks and underwear, and using the hair dryer on arrival at the hotel is a nuisance, but survivable. The kit on the plane is ok for shaving and tooth cleaning.

Currently sitting in the SYD Flounge and just finished a rather nice omlette.

No problems thus far with two pieces of carry-on - backpack for the laptop and the roll-aboard for the rest of my stuff.

Must say that I quite like this mode of travel. Will be even better once I hit the US!

So the challenge is 2 for 2!

Good luck - hope you get back to us if you find any problems.

Now in the T4 Flagship Lounge and have successfully negotiated T4 screening with these two pieces. Will not go landside again until I reach PIT tonight.

Oh, thanks again serfty for the tip on elite screening at T4 - saved me about 15 minutes this morning. :) Now if only they would recognise the APEC card

Well the APEC card is only for Immigration - which TSA security line are not. And I have seen APEC signs at crew lanes both at T4 and TBIT so it is recognised where applicable.

Yes I was aware of that - I was referring to T4 immigration, not security screening.

A mate of mine from Sydney was on the same flight as me and he has a BTC too. We both fronted up to the crew lane at T4 (the one that also has the big APEC sign) and the immigration officer told us he wasn't processing anyone and walked away.

This was before any of the crew had arrived. As soon as the crew started lining up an officer started processing them.

We were more concered about ending up at the back of the visitors queue so once it became clear they weren't going to process us we jumped back into the visitor's line.

Well that sucks! I assume you didn't want to bother pointing out the sign to them...

As politely as we could we pointed at the APEC sign and asked if we could be cleared in that lane, but just received the response posted above. We didn't push the point (although maybe we should have), although neither of us really wanted to antagonise the immigration officer at that point

I realise most comments relate to business travel, but I find shoes are biggest consumers of space on carry on bags, my wife likes to flow her shoes into my bag. I find if travelling to a warmer climate like Sri Lanka, socks and sandels are just the greatest, getting rid of the socks after arriving.

A brief update :)

Currently sat in Shanghai. Office dress here is no suit required - so I could have travelled without a suit at all - definitely no suit on the next trip.

I am however starting to get bored with the clothes I brought - there are still two shirts unused. the big downer is shopping - given I am travelling to three shopping mecca it is curtailing my activities slightly - but maybe that is a good thing ;)
