Well. well, a good ending to SOB! But then a missed opportunity on the chance to get a brand new light weight laptop!! :D

Cheers all. Just sat in the QF HKG F lounge (closer to the gate and they still servce champagne - and I wasn't in the mood to eat before the flight as I am now in F on the way home!!!).

My biggest challenge is that although I am home tomorrow and not in the office I had planned a large amount of work to do from home - kind of tough without the laptop...

You might have to buy that new one after all :!:

A Light Weight Laptop?

Methinks the data may be more important! Not to mention who owns the laptop currently transiting the never never.

In other posts within this forum, the OP had mentioned the equipment effectively "belonga Boss" - implied with the reference to inability to access "Control Panel".

simongr and shano, have just read the entire thread now. Wow, I'd never try to do trips of that length with that little luggage.

My best was a small rollaboard on my BNE/SYD/PER/ADL/SYD/BNE 3 day trip last week, with one suit, 3 shirt & ties, 3 smalls and singlets, one pair shoes in luggage with second being worn with 3 pairs socks.

Hope your laptop is returned undamaged and un-hacked simongr. I don't know what's worse - having my luggage going astay or my laptop. You must have been kicking yourself about leaving it back in LHR.

I must confess that I did end up checking my roll-aboard in for the LAX-SYD-MEL flights. I was under strict instructions to get Baby Gap clothes for mini-Shano, which combined with some paperwork from our PIT office and the conference I attended, meant the bag would have been well over the QF 7 kg allowance. Fortunately my bag is expandable so that I could cram all this in.

Other than that I the trip with carry-on only was a breeze. I packed too much in the end (not helped by the fact I was given a couple of polo shirts with our company logo to wear at the conference).

No problem with liquids either (the shaving oil is great to use and very compact) and I ended up taking shoe polish. This all fit neatly in the 1 quart bag.

If doing this sort of trip again I wouldn't hesitate about carry-on only.

I'm just heading to the beach - I recommend it. Without a laptop, doesn't all work cease? Unless, as I do, have a PC at home with the laptop backed up onto it.

So Simongr, what is the outcome of your challenge?? A better way for you to travel? or would you limit it to a number of stops or days away?

I have a new religion - the Church of Minimal Luggage !!!! I was pacing at Sydney even though I had to wait only 5-10 mins for the one bag. When mrssimongr and I travel next year we will aim for one checked bag on departure - not sure about the return though ;)

simongr, I can almost guarantee that you'll come home with a second bag -full of your clothes, because mrssimongr won't care whether your clothes make it back or not, her purchases are first).

We travel with one bag for mini-LW and one for us. Amazing how much a baby can wear (and eat) on a holiday (I can understan the Gap purchases shano!)

when myself, mrs alect and mini-alect went to Ireland for 2 weeks driving holiday in July, we only had one checked bag (well actually there was also the car seat, but that doesn't count for you). The check-in agent at LAX was amazed that was it for the three of us.

I have a rule that my wife is very happy to live by - never come home with more bags than we leave with. Never shop overseas - everything is available here - if you save money, it's not worth the hassle, time and carrying.

I've to confess that shopping takes up the bulk of my time overseas, which means I always come back with more bags than I leave with. I don't do museums, galleries etc. Just shopping, maybe a few of the major sights just to tick off the 'been there done that' list, good food, and drinking myself into oblivion at nightfall.

Hmm... not BlissWorld products. :p
I've never tried their online mail order thingy though, maybe I should. But who knows how long stuff will take to get here.

Oh and things take so long to appear down here even if they are available here eventually. For instance, I bought my Giorgio Armani sunnies in London on the day that design was launched, and it only appeared here 7 months later...:-|

Fortunately my parents think the same way! :D

I can't imagine it. Even on holidays, I wouldn't consider going near shops unless essential. I detest shopping at the best of times. But to shop overseas then carry everything back - ugh. Giorgio Armani - never heard of them - to me most sunglass are much the same - wouldn't pay more than $25 for a pair. What about watches? Saw one in Switzerland for $3,000. It had the same time as my $150 watch, so why would I pay more? The shop assistant looked very confused when I made this point - perhaps didn't realise that watches are only there to tell the time. The same as sunglasses are only there to cut down on the glare.

Could not agree more. I don't believe in, so called, fancy brand names.

Many years ago I used to buy the Pacifica brand of pleated trousers from Lowes or Target for around $40. One day walking through David Jones saw exactly the same pair of pleated trousers for $79. I have also seen the same shirt sold with different brand labels.

I'm with you - I probably average about $200/year on clothes and shoes for myself (I bought a pile of trousers and shirts in Thailand about 10 years ago, and still wearing them) Shoes - about one pair every 5 years is enough (I'm bare footed much of the time, and long lasting safety boots). I guess this is one of the ways I accumulated my wealth.
