Does anyone know if the House at Sydney airport has returned to a la carte dining?

Didn’t have it yesterday. Fairly average tbh. A basic buffet and the bar. Furniture was worn and tired. I only went for a walk for the sake of using the priority pass card (and quickly retreated back to the QF J lounge - that’s saying something!)

I’m now torn between stumping up ~$80 for The House or slumming it in the Amex Centurion Lounge for 3 hrs. From all very recent reviews that I could find, neither are worth while with their current offerings

Just go to the Amex lounge. I’d spend $80 in the terminal before paying for the house at the moment.

No, there's no table service and didn't appear to be any "premium drinks" so it seems that's off for the time being

We've had two of those and a mojito on my previous visits with my partner - albeit being EY Plat - unsure if that would change something.

The House lounge doesn't cost anything to access since that's included in the Priority Pass benefits as a AmEx Platinum card (indeed having access to Priority Pass was one of the key reasons I shell out $700/year for the card - it makes my JQ flights out of SYD more enjoyable since I can access the Rex Executive Lounge). Centurion lounge is okay albeit it's a bit cramped. They recently revamped the food to bring it up to US standards. Other thing to remember too as a Platinum is you have access to the Plaza Premium lounges too which can be helpful not just for departure but also for arrivals (as Plaza has an arrival lounge).

In terms of lounges at SYD, I would make the argument that if you don't have QF WP or P1, but are travelling QF/EK (as a QF Gold) the EK lounge is the best lounge out there not just in terms of the food and booze but also the other amenities like shower and the fact that it's not chock-a-block like the QF J lounge at SYD.

was thinking to visit this lounge since HSBC credit card has free access. Then found out my flight can get me to the Air New Zealand lounge, looking forward to it!

I’d agree with you generally.

If I were to list preferences, first to last, it would be:

QF F
EK lounge
The House
Centurion

QF J is off list. I’d consider going there if lounge is refurbished.

I was in both the House and Amex lounge on Monday morning.
Both much of a muchness, maybe slightly smarter in the House.
Both now have natural light with some view of aircraft (House better).
The breakfast at Amex was tastier and the bar seemed more amenable to drinks. I've been a bit of a critic in past but seems to have improved since last visit there.
House did seem to have a proper coffee service but can't comment on quality.
Both free to me with Amex Plat/complimentary PP

However, on the drinks front, I was appalled by the service at the bar in the Amex lounge. I asked for a sparkling white wine to go with my breakfast and was met with a stony look and was served a thimble full (I guess the barperson disapproved).

So I ate my breakfast and moved to the House, where I was warmly welcomed and served whatever drinks I requested with a smile and in decent measures. Won't be visiting the Amex lounge in a hurry again...

Given they’re both operated by Plaza Premium, I wouldn’t be surprised if the staff move between the lounges

Agree - was in the Mel house lounge last week, and found it to be quieter, with better service and food compared to Amex / Qantas Bus lounges. I was pleasantly surprised and it was a great way to start our holiday!

If one books in advance, it's GBP34.69 that is about A$68 at today's exchange rate.

Is the walk-in cost per person A$80 still?

Does it still have basic breakfast items like yoghurts as well as the photo above's bacon and sausages?

While I may not partake, is alcohol served at any time this lounge is open, or is it restricted to say '1200 or after'?

Cannot comment on breakfast as I've never been crazy to leave the international terminal in the morning, but will say it's a buffet breakfast (with the option to buy in for a-la carte dining IIRC). Representative menus can be found here

I believe at least in Sydney state law requires booze to be served at noon or after so not necessarily a lounge issue.
