I've noticed in relation to booking connecting legs on local services (suburban/intercity trains), that if your origin/destination is one of the intercity stations from which it's also possible to book on regional services for travel to Sydney, the booking site won't offer it.
For example, for a trip from Brisbane to Bowral, it will only offer one of the 3x daily Canberra Xplorer services for the Central - Bowral leg, which may result in a very long connection, whilst it may be far more convenient to utilise one of the local intercity services via Campbelltown that run around every hour.
However that issue can be avoided by booking a trip from Brisbane to Burradoo, which is only serviced by intercity trains, hence it will allow me to utilise local services for the Central - Burradoo section.
I don't think that skiplagging in this instance, e.g. by alighting a local train at Bowral when my ticket is for travel 2 minutes further down the line to Burradoo, would be breaking any rules.
