The NSW TrainLink Discovery Pass

I've noticed in relation to booking connecting legs on local services (suburban/intercity trains), that if your origin/destination is one of the intercity stations from which it's also possible to book on regional services for travel to Sydney, the booking site won't offer it.

For example, for a trip from Brisbane to Bowral, it will only offer one of the 3x daily Canberra Xplorer services for the Central - Bowral leg, which may result in a very long connection, whilst it may be far more convenient to utilise one of the local intercity services via Campbelltown that run around every hour.

However that issue can be avoided by booking a trip from Brisbane to Burradoo, which is only serviced by intercity trains, hence it will allow me to utilise local services for the Central - Burradoo section.

I don't think that skiplagging in this instance, e.g. by alighting a local train at Bowral when my ticket is for travel 2 minutes further down the line to Burradoo, would be breaking any rules.

You can't "book" on local trains such as the Campbelltown to Moss Vale local Endeavour railcars. You just hop on, as there are no seat reservations.

I'm well aware of that. I've been travelling on those services very regularly for several years.

However if you are wishing to utilise any suburban or intercity in conjunction with a longer regional trip booked using a Discovery Pass, you must book your ticket to/from your final origin/destination, which will issue you a ticket both with a reserved seat for your regional service, and allowing unreserved travel on suburban or intercity services if required to reach your destination/origin.

For an example, this is an excerpt of a ticket for a journey that I undertook previously:

You cannot otherwise use a Discovery Pass to travel on suburban or intercity trains, unless you have booked a ticket similar to the above in which you are connecting to/from a regional service.

This makes sense as otherwise you would be saving a lot of money buying the pass compared to the opal cap for suburban/interurban journeys.
