The "official" Velocity partnership announcement thread

Guys, QF is stripping F seats out of their long hauls and replacing them with J seats as the bean counters have apparently told them this is where the sweet meat is. Now DJ will cut their b*lls off by offering 2 for 1 full fare J seats. This is a knife right into the heart of the QF J profit centre.

Gutsy move my DJ and Amex.

Without trying to dis virgin before the product is officially announced. I just jumped on V Aus and looked at SYD-LAX in J You know you need to buy full flex tickets for the 2-1 offer?

Well J deal is $3300
J Flex is $7000+

So it might not be as good as a deal as you may thing. Of course, this is just one example. I'm sure there are many more which are more beneficial. Such as last minuet bookings.

Thank you all for your company and fellow rant and banter sharing over the past few days. It has been fun.

So....................................................

Um...................................................

Yeah.....

Now......

Erm.....

Hey, I have an idea, VR, why don't you pass me on some exciting new information and I will drip feed it to the assembled throng over the months to come...

I wonder, does the fact they are launching these cards might mean that the program refresh will not involve a name change or is that not big a deal.

And is that strange / confusing, there is now a Velocity Platinum Credit Card. Is this the same and/or different to the Velocty Platinum that was proposed. Similar for Gold. How can I have a gold card and say, not be a Gold Vel member?

Check the high end QF J ticket that the corps buy. I see 2 DJ full fare J seats for less than 1 QF full fare seat. That differential is enough to get corps to think about changing who they buy full fare J tickets from.

This is very good for filling empty DJ long haul J seats while causing QF problems filling those extra J seats they are installing.

Very smart move.

So, some 29 pages of self-indulgent wittering claptrap later, the world has a new credit card. Ain't that dandy! As one other much further back up the thread observed, one advantage of living in PER is not having to delay bedtime unnecessarily on this particular occasion. Bonsoir!

FYI, the QF J corp rate is often a lot cheaper than the fare you see on the QF web site; having said that, competition like this will keep QF honest!!

Let's think back to Qantas's comments when Virgin was just starting up...

  • “Virgin Blue is a lot of media hype.”
  • “This market is not big enough to sustain Virgin Blue.”
  • “Virgin Blue doesn’t have deep enough pockets to cope.”
  • “Qantas will employ any option to see off this interloper.”
  • “They’ll be unlikely to survive a year.”
  • “Claims by Richard Branson that domestic fares are high are a misnomer"

OK, it's time to reveal the announcement. Let me preface this by saying that the most exciting part of my day has been experiencing Virgin Australia's business class on the A330. The announcement is good, but:

a) The Virgin Australia SYD-PER flight was the best domestic flight I've ever had. I want to experience it again, and would be happy to pay for it in Velocity points or cash.

b) The new partnership with Singapore Airlines is well deserved. Having flown business class on both airlines, I can't say which is better but they are both really good and make potentially tedious travel a real pleasure.

A proper trip report will be forthcoming soon. In the meantime, I'm sure you're keen to hear the announcement... this relates to a new partnership with American Express and a range of co-branded credit cards. Our lunch included "The AFF Five" (love the title), Velocity Rewards, American Express and CreditCardFinder.com.au. Specifically:

The American Express Velocity Platinum Card (credit card)
Unlimited two-for-one international Business Class Flexi fares on V Australia (and Delta code-shares).
1.5 points per dollar uncapped, plus 3 points per dollar when spending with the Virign Australia group.
Complimentary return flight annually.
Two complimetary lounge passes per year.
30,000 bonus Velocity points for applications by September 30, following $500 spend
$349 annual card fee, $0 for supplementary cards

The American Express Velocity Gold Card (credit card)
1.25 points per dollar uncapped, plus 2.5 points per dollar when spending with the Virign Australia group.
Two complimentary lounge passes per year.
20,000 bonus Velocity points for applications by September 30, following $500 spend
$199 annual card fee, $0 for supplementary cards

The American Express Velocity Business Card (charge card)
1 point per dollar uncapped, plus 2 points per dollar when spending with the Virgin Australia group.
Two complimentary lounge passes per year.
20,000 bonus Velocity points for applications by September 30, following $500 spend.
$249 annual card fee, $99 for supplementary cards
Additionally all cards include domestic and overseas travel insurance, purchase protection and refund protection.

My personal opinion, without much analysis, is that the platinum card seems like a good deal if you can utilise the 2-for-1 business class flights. I don't know much about business cards but it sounds competitive.

It's been amusing watching this thread throughout the day. I find it compelling that Velocity Rewards and American Express have invited AFF members to be part of the launch and to contribute their opinions on a variety of topics. But most of all, it has been a privilege to share this opportunity with the other members of the "AFF Five", namely oz_mark, Travel Guru, pshepvic and malmacdowell.

... and you can see a picture of the card in the ads that seem to be coming up already!

So the two-for-one business class flights are only on Virgin Australia and Delta, not Etihad or Air New Zealand or upcoming partner Singapore Airlines?

QANTAS or VIRGIN - SYD to LAX for TWO

Random flight dates: 15th of October, and return 15th November 2011

QANTAS

FULL BUSINESS FARE = $14,285.14 (return) x 2

TOTAL COST for two FULL Business class travelers = $28,570.00

VIRGIN AUSTRALIA with New VELOCITY/AMEX PLATINUM

FULL BUSINESS FARE = $14,158.14 (return)

+ $153.14 Taxes/surcharges for second J class ticket.

TOTAL COST for two FULL Business class travelers

VELOCITY/AMEX PLATINUM = $14,311.28

VIRGIN AUSTRALIA is a huge $14,258.72 Cheaper.

??

I found Syd/Lax in J:

A$4,378 for J Deal
A$7,109 for J Flex

So 2 x J Deal at A$8,756 versus 1 x J Flex @ A$7,109. If the charges for the extra seat are less that A$1,647 then you save money on the 2 x J seats at the J Flex price.

Too many red wines... Passed put... Missed all the fun..... Glad to see the embargo wasn't broken by the AFF5.... Thanks again Velocity Rewards and Amex for a wonderful day BUT most importantly for valuing the input and contribution that all AFF members make..... As we mentioned to Phil, we are your biggest fans and harshest critics..... And its a credit to Virgin to have such active involvement from Velocity Rewards, Virgin Australia and other reps on the AFF site.....

Well they did refuse to confirm or deny they got the first 5 DJ Platinum cards. Maybe the same card?

While I can't speak for what anyone else was able to get, there was no plat card for me
