The Operational Upgrade Thread

MEL-SYD. Been a while since I got a rainbow so it was nice when getting the boarding pass at the J lounge to see that 23A (I think) became 3A on a fully flexible. Seat next to me remained empty too.
I was forced into this 6:00 am flight so that helped make up for it.

A rainbow?

Being a one-step upgrade, while a double rainbow (on AFF!) is from say Y to Y+ to J. That term has been used around here and I just checked again to make sure before I wrote this reply :p

Ah thanks - Joy b giv... Or something liked that.

Got my second ever op-up today. Flying BNE-CNS and got moved from 13C to 2F :D
Helps when the flight goes J0 Y0.

Boarding pass reader beeped red last night when my boarding pass was scanned. The FA looked at the screen and I could see my name at the top with 1F next to it not my pre-assigned 4D. I was told to go over to service desk and have boarding pass reprinted. I protested but was told that it was too late to swap back as we were about to depart.

First op-up in a long long long time. Blame the school holidays.

So turns out a college of mine was meant to fly the same flight BNE-CNS as I did but connecting from the later SYD-BNE (QF540 as opposed to my QF536), and due to the sellout he was contacted by QF the day before and moved to the direct CNS-SYD QF924 and given a free upgrade.

Yay, got my first ever upgrade with Qantas on Friday - ASP to MEL. Checked in at ASP and presented with 3 business class tickets which was a pleasant surprise, even better was my ticket was a red e-deal and my Wife & Son's tickets were done on points so got to be happy with that!

Thanks Qantas!

2nd upgrade in as many months. Mel to Syd this morning, OLCI to 4F got bumped up at the gate to 2F. I love you Qantas. Funny thing was there was no beep or delay when i presented my Q Card, just a fresh docket showing my new seat allocation which i noticed by accident. My NB new employee travelling on the same itinerary got an upgrade as well. He wants to fly with me all the time from now on (thinks i am some big shot in the QFF programme) as he got J lounge access plus upgrade.

Got my three out of three on EK302 DXB-PVG Y->J upgrade last week - and first usage of the F lounge in Dubai prior as well.

I'm flying MEL-LAX (A380) next month and was curious if anyone has any tips on anything I can do to help get an Upgrade ? or is it usually just random people that get them ?

1) Become valuable to the airline by buying more expensive tickets in more expensive cabins and doing it frequently enough to be further in front of the upgrade hopeful queue than other hopefuls

2) expect that someone will be more valuable to the airline than you and will get the upgrade before you.

3) if you buy a cheap discount ticket expect that the only upgrade you may get is nicer service on the airplane or nothing.

4) there are other tips such as travelling alone, dressing appropriately, low season travel, but these are not in the main successful as others will be doing it the same too.

Thats a very popular route so chances of an OPUP are slim. Better luck can be had with points, but depends on your Status with QF

Sun 30 August SYD-BNE checked in at the kiosk ~40 minutes before flight and the computer had moved me from 4D -> 3D with sequence #172.

I think that is the second op-up this year.

Wait... so you're telling me you checked in not only pretty much last but after the plane was already filled.

I do that every week. Pre-select 4D, 4C at T-80 and then don't use OLCI.

There are 174 seats in the refurb'ed 738 so it's possible.
This wasn't a refurbished aircraft.

Higher sequence numbers could be as a result of infants on board or people who were checked in but move to earlier or another flight.

Op up on 30/8, QF 17, SYD-LAX. Premium economy sale ticket, ex USA, moved to 8E. Didn't mind the middle seat at all:cool:
Buying all my USA tickets ex USA and "W" class, only planning 2-4 months ahead with $200 change fee. Good value.

Thanks Red Roo.

Cheers

Mrs NinnyPoo received an upgrade from PE to Business on SQ (SIN to SYD) on SQ231. Apparently some people wanted to all sit together. The stars aligned and SQ gave her an upgrade to Business. She is a Kris Flyer member but no status.
