Very surprised last Monday. Newly minted WP. QF615 BNE-MEL. Pulled up booking on phone in lounge after getting delay notification to see 3A. Asked on way out of J lounge and handed J bp with very funny commentary about QF's generosity. Maybe same tomorrow morning. I'm on a 787 to MEL. Able to select Y+ so happy with that.

Not going to jinx it by naming the route, but I am now 3/3 op-ups for the same flight each Sunday arvo for the last three weeks. Just checked mobile boarding pass to see new seat up in J again.

Flight doesn't look super full on EF either...
Dom or international ?

Well, the 'dream' op-up run came to an end yesterday.

The three flights were all on Sundays, QF627 BNE-MEL with the B789 on DOM ops.

No such luck yesterday, relegated to my chosen Y+ seat... without working IFE (!)

first ever op-up on DL, my son and I ( 30 odd flights with them over the years) LAS-LAX. Purchased cheapest tix,$50 each, ones you cant select seats for. Arrived at airport, asked to move to earlier flight which was approved ( VA WP ) and was told we got the last 2 seats.
Magical beep at gate and new BP's show 3D and F -E-170. First time in DL F
.

UA71 AMS-EWR

Economy was oversold on today's flight and I was handed a new boarding pass for 1L at the gate. I have UA Gold status so that probably helped.

Had a nice flight and the service was better than I expected for United.

Op-up from Y+ to J on BA98 (YYZ-LHR) on 21/12.
3 pax on the booking, 2 of which are WP, one with no status.
F seats on the 744 were being sold as J as flight was originally scheduled to be a 788, but zone 1 was reserved for paid J pax.

Interestingly, the "temporary" BA Plaza Premium lounge at YYZ featured an a la carte section for F (none) and Emerald pax - very nice.

Virtually unheard of unless WP1 or CL (or both)

Totally agree with you mrsterryn.
I fly enough to have kept Qantas Platinum since 2014.
My last op up international was with a code share flight with Emirates from DXB to AMS in 2015. A totally fantastic and unforgettable experience:)
Last domestic SYD-MEL op up in 2014.
Maybe the T&C’s for QF have removed the op up option?

With over 10 million members with points to burn and often used to upgrade there is less need to offer free upgrades for any reason, CL and WP1 being the exception. As a business Qantas wants members to use points rather than hoard them.

wonder how many upgrade requests with points are in play on any domestic or international flights. Have any if us seen many flights where the premium classes are empty or half full?

I am sure Qantas have done the numbers and worked out all the angles on how to maximize revenue and points usage to reduce the need for op ups.

My friend who is a CLPO (Chairmans lounge platinum one - this is the term used by the inflight CSMs) and who averages 7000 SC per year says his upgrade on DOM is 99% (meaning its usually assured but not guaranteed) and INT upgrade J to F (if F is available) is 70%. He was blocked once because of a famous Boy band who purchased all the non passenger occupied F seats
Im told the upgrades were all operational and not via points upgrade.
