The Pinot Noir & Grenache Thread

Hey guys, I made the mistake of introducing my partner to Burgundy red at a restaurant last night, and now he wants MORE.
I don’t normally like to spend more than $50 on wine but I recognize that’s not enough for good burgundy. Can anyone recommend good value for money options or other tips, eg pinot from other regions?

New Zealand Central Otago, Morning Peninsular and Tasmania are good sources of excellent Pinot. $50 will buy you a nice one.

Thanks, I get a lot of pinots from there - but the hubby wants more burgundy ones, so I’m looking for tips on good value for money options, knowing they will cost more than $50. By "other regions" I meant other French regions producing a similar style (eg Alsace).

Unfortunately, no easy answer. Work is required to find value. General tips:
- Cote de Beaune better value generally that Cote de nuits (Pommard and Volnay are traditionally good examples of the ends of the spectrum).
- Cote Chalonaisse and Maconnais are cheaper than the above but more known for whites
- Cru Beajoulais is your friend!

Ok. IMHO, I don’t think there’s any good French Burgundys under around $100. Buy one or two, Bouchard Père & Fils, or maybe Jean Grivot, or some Nuits St George to try. Available in Australia but one has to pay a bit through the nose for them then let them mature for some years. Essentially I’ve given up on French Pinot in Australia, fine when you are in France or Europe, but the ones from previous post and more approachable younger and better value. YMMV!

I buy a case a year from Domaine Hubert Lamy out of St Aubin. St Aubin is more known for white Burgundy but the reds are excellent value. See if you can track down some producers from that area, it represents some of the beat quality to price.

glad to hear, somewhat surprised that everyone here didn't buy all the HD/Clos before the TWC email went out on Wednesday and there was still stock - the best time for both of you should be in more than a few years :)

$120 @ Grape Belief - 6 bottles :)

True, but hopefully the highest-ever rated Beaujolais on Winefront, and equal-highest gamay with Sorrenberg's 2017, might come close:

$53.10 @ Different Drop using TUES10 for 10% off - ends next Tuesday

Dan's clearance continues with new wines reduced, the highlight being Lethbridge 2017 for $33.20 - however at Parkdale, besides champagne, before discounts:
  • Lethbridge 2017 - MB/SC(HWC)95, CM(WF)94, NS93 - $19
  • Gembrook Hill 2017 - CM(WF)96, JH95 - $28
To maintain clearance prices, don't buy store stock (in-store/click+collect), as when that's gone, so is the clearance price - instead, deliver to Parcel Collect at the store's nearest post office (Parkdale LPO here)

In case anyone's interested, my favourite/biggest/best buys of the 2017 vintage have been Bay of Fires, Felton Road Bannockburn, Hoddles Creek, Lethbridge
2017 Gembrook Hill Estate Pinot Noir - CM(WF)96, HH/JH95, NS93:

Coldstream Hills Reserve Pinot Noir 2012 - JO/CM(WF)96 - $61.67 delivered in 6pk @ CellarDoor.co after $20 welcome voucher - 14 left

Stonier: 2019 (CM(WF)/HH92) $16.50, 2019 Reserve (JH97, CM(WF)/HH95) $40.58 @ Cellar One delivered in 6pks after $20 referral

Bought half dozen Sam Neil Two Paddocks and half dozen of Duncan’s Mount Edward Pinot.

The Mount Edward just blows away the Two Paddocks, surprisingly. Two Paddocks is one of my favourite CO pinots but the recent one is on the light side. Hopefully will improve over time..

Mount Edward is just lovely drinking now, will be impressive in a year or two.

Already in for $30 with free Riedel but any idea what the wines are? Are they all De Bortoli?

Shame it's Melbourne only, otherwise, I would have jumped right in.

Might try and see if I can arrange my own delivery!

Actually looks light it might not be Melbourne only, just have to pay for shipping... was confused by the description, oops!
