I have booked Syd to Vienna (Y), via Dubai, with QF, but will be flying with EK.
Having recently made it to Silver with QF, I have a complimentary general lounge invitation. Will I be able to use this on my way home, when I have a 4 hour wait in Dubai?

Does the EK flight booked with QF have a QF or EK flight number? If it has a QF number in theory you should be able to log in to your account and link your lounge invitation to that flight, which if allowed would grant you access to the business lounge @ SYD

As I understand it the general rule of thumb is that QF passes can only be used in QF lounges, and there is no QF lounge in Dubai.

I don't see how this is relevant as they are originating from SYD which does have a QF International J lounge.

@OATEK and @kangarooflyer88, it wasn't the answer I was hoping for, but thanks for your replies. I never even thought to check if there was a lounge in Dubai.
My flight from Sydney departs at 6am, so I'm not sure I want to use it then. I probably save it and hope to fit in another flight before it expires.

I have been looking at the Qantas website and came across “purchase top up points “. Are these worthwhile. I looked at purchasing 15,000 points at a cost of $532. If my maths is right??? this equates to 0.035 per point. Earlier threads have noted that in general a Qantas point is equal to 1 cent. So purchasing below one cent seems to be a good deal. What have I done wrong?

QF status passengers (Gold and above) can use the EK lounges, as can QANTAS Club members if they are on an EK flight but booked on a QF codeshare flight (eg QF flight number).

If you check your maths, Qantas are offering the points at 3.5c/point, which generally isn't a good deal. Better to buy something through Qantas Wines, or get gift cards through Woolies or the like.

It did work in my favour once though, when we had to cancel an overseas trip at the last moment and the travel insurance covered everything. I had booked one leg using points, and AAMI paid us $300 for the 10,000 points I lost, as that was the rate Qantas offered them at.

Yes, not good value. If you were short just a few thousand to book something immediately then consider it but as suggested, there are better ways if you have time on your side.

I have just attained Silver and would like to earn 32k points to get Points Club Plus before my membership year ends in late Feb (55 days away). Are there any options to get these points cheaply? I don't drink much wine/alcohol. And while I could apply for another CC, it seems a waste to get anything in excess of 32k points in this membership year. EDITED to add: if my partner transfers the points to me, would that count?

No, family transfers do not count towards attaining points club. (Nor do transfers from Qantas Business Rewards.)

IATA airline codes don't always have a rhyme or reason. Sometimes there can be a nice match between the airline and the code as is the case with British Airways (BA), Air Canada (AC), Air New Zealand (NZ), All Nihon (Nippon) Airways (NH), Air China is CA despite there being an airline called China Airlines that would more closely fit that designator. At the same time Air China couldn't get the IATA code since Air Canada has that code. US carrier JetBlue has the IATA code B6 whereas Southwest has the IATA code WN.

As an aside airport codes also don't seem to have much of a rhyme or reason either. Some countries like Brazil and Canada use airport codes that start with a specific letter (G for Brazil, Y for Canada). Other airports use historical names of cities as is the case with PEKing (Beijing), BOMbay (Mumbai) and SaiGoN (Ho Chi Minh City). Other airports take the name of the airport/airfield's name as is the case with Chicago's ORcharD (O'Hare) field, New York's John F. Kennedy airport or London's GatWick.

If QANTAS had a say in the matter, I’d suggest it’s F for “Fysh” as in Hudson Fysh (founder of QANTAS).

Funny that peeps in the other thread missed the humour in DJ and Virgin Blue.

In spite of that whole other thread, and replies above, we still don't know what the F in QF stands for, other than it possibly being a random letter. Like some others I assumed it was F for Flight.

Qatar QR MMB accepts e-ticket number. That may show other info.
