The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

I’ll be flying Qantas Business Class internationally for the first time ever in a few weeks. Just wanted to check if the business class ticket automatically entitles me to access the Qantas international business lounge or do I need a Qantas club membership in addition to the ticket (like on domestic flights)?

Yes (and neither do you need a Qantas club membership with a business class ticket for domestic flights):

Thanks very much for the info. I’ve always travelled with a Qantas club member even when I’ve travelled business domestically so I just assumed. Good to know I can access the business lounge without QC. Lol.

When travelling domestically in J you can actually access the domestic business lounge (where available in major capital cities) which is a step up from the Qantas Club.

If MEL the J QF business lounge is on ground (basement/dungeon level) and not close to the F QF first lounge.
SYD both are next to each other.
PER at T3.

Hello all. First time taking Qantas and tried the T80 rule. Worked perfectly and selected upper deck premium economy, an absolute steal cause I only paid for economy. I see the extra legroom seats are free to select as well. Is that always the case? Cause I saw on the website only top tier members can do that. I am a OW ruby if that helps?

As there is also a 2-4-2 section on the upper deck, I assume it’s VH-OQL? When is that bird getting a refurbishment? Thanks😀

Are you sure its W? I thought the older non refurbished A380s had some Y seats on the upper deck whereas the refurbished ones dont.

Welcome to AFF.

Are you flying to HKG? Apparently they’re using non-refurbished A380s so yep, there would be 2-3-2 PE and some 2-4-2 standard economy. Are they selling PE fares? If not, then yes you might have lucked in with remaining seats! Nice.

Status PAX probably could have selected those at time of booking a whY fare. Handy to know and similar to J PAX being able to select the First cabin seats.

My father had a leg on his One World award RTW ticket cancelled. He had to book another flight to cover that leg as there were no other options available (it was a BA flight) and would like to now claim the taxes back from that cancelled flight.

Needless to say when he rang the call centre he got given the runaround and was told he can't have the flight refunded, which is not what he requested. He is rightfully requesting a refund of the associated taxes with that leg.

I can't for the life of me find where to submit such a request on the QF portal to help him. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

@FlyingFiona , if it was a QF reward, then this article is helpful. There's an email address to a specialist team who resolve these kinds of things.
I just had a 27-hour turnaround from them after the QF call centre was clueless of options available.

Thanks! I knew there must be a a way of getting it refunded, just not where to go to get that to happen. Hopefully this email will find a helpful person.

Hi everyone. Looking to book some hard-to-get First/Biz class flights to Europe in 2024. Tried searching for an answer to this - is there any reason why I shouldn't book two one-way fares to Europe as opposed to a return booking on the one itinerary? My thoughts are that as soon as I'm able to book flights I should lock them in, however if I'm going to have to pay double taxes or some other penalty for booking one way tickets then I'll wait to book return and hope that they're still available. Can anyone advise? Thank you!

Welcome on board.
Don't know the exact answer, but my 2 rupees worth.
Any J or F seats out of the UK, if going there will elicit a hug amount of APD, and went up more in Apr.

With regards to QFF, what is your QFF status?
For points redemption, on QFi flights, if you are higher up the status pecking order, the more chances of gaining the seats, even if you have a lot of points.

the short answer is any non-Oz booking is in local currency so will cost you both on the exchange rate and potentially upto 3% of the transaction.

Aside that, taxes etc don't get calculated differently

See #5 in that article

should you pursue the option proposed, you may find it useful to consider re-positioning to anywhere in Australia or Auckland (or NZ) for that matter to locate the number of seats you may need.

If you're talking redemptions I like to book individual trips. Taxes are the same (with the exception of the FX fee, which is minimal for that amount). It means that if something goes belly up with one flight both aren't affected. Eg if it needs to be reticketed and QF stuffs up and doesn't do it in time, it minimizes damage. The only negative I can think of would be if you had to change both your outward and inbound dates because you'd be hit with two change fees instead of just one (but I haven't had to do that, yet).

You might also consider booking a One World round the world ticket if you meet the requirements (which isn't overly difficult) and find seats.

Fantastic advice - thank you to everyone. I'm only a Bronze QFF so don't have high hopes of jagging any incredible fares but definitely open to starting our journey from Asia to boost our odds. Will report back with hopefully good news. Thanks again!

Hi All

I'm currently booking flights to Japan, and am a little confused.

For 75,600 points I'm booking two classic reward seats to Tokyo with what I thought to be $205 taxes/fees. On the next page it's calling it "Points Plus Pay". I guess I thought classic reward flights and points plus pay were different things.

Is there any downside to purchasing the ticket with points and cash?

Sorry, I know this is likely a simple question to QFF veterans!
