The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Hi All

I'm currently booking flights to Japan, and am a little confused.

For 75,600 points I'm booking two classic reward seats to Tokyo with what I thought to be $205 taxes/fees. On the next page it's calling it "Points Plus Pay". I guess I thought classic reward flights and points plus pay were different things.

Is there any downside to purchasing the ticket with points and cash?

Sorry, I know this is likely a simple question to QFF veterans!
They are different things. 75k points to Japan for two (Y) seats sounds right for a CR - it would be far more for points plus pay. The $205 taxes etc also sounds about right.

double check the fare conditions say classic reward. Not sure why it would say points plus pay UNLESS that's a prompt to pay that $205 in points (I can't remember if that comes as an option anymore tbh).

Remember when selecting flights to be extra sure if you select "Classic Rewards" in the filter then you will only see the CR's (with the symbol) to book, but those figures sound about right for two.

Thanks for the clarification!

Apologies if this has been asked and answered. I did search, but maybe my "Google Fu" isn't what it once was? 😜

Assuming I do OLCI for a flight departing SYD T1, how early can I actually do the bag drop and make my way through to airside (and the Lounge)? Not that I want to actually do this, but I'm suspecting it's technically possible from 2:30am (for bag drop) / 4am (for customs) / 5am (for FLounge access)? Not looking to do anything quite that crazy, but was hoping to be able to enter early afternoon for a mid-evening flight.

Prior to the pandemic, QF had all-day check in at SYD international, so you could check in at a counter as early as 4AM (not sure on self-check), and use the lounge from when it opened at 5AM, regardless of your flight time, so long as it departed that day. I’ve not seen or heard of changes to this; but others may be better placed to confirm

Cheers,
Matt.

Thanks Matt. Just Googled "Qantas all day check in" (that was the phrase I was missing) and quickly found an March 2023 Exec Traveller article re: LAX that explicitly mentioned the same for SYD T1.

Qantas now offers early check-in at LAX

Flying out in three weeks time SYD-SIN in Y aboard QF1. Availability looks like this
81388374-2736-403A-BD99-BF4C1E96D789.jpeg
have three seats booked with one being an infant in seat. Requested upgrade to PE even though I know it’s almost guaranteed it wouldn’t happen.

Anyway, hypothetically, if they did choose to upgrade 3 Y to PE, would they guarantee sitting together seeing as one is an infant?

I'd say no. This is what the seat map looks like now. Although looks like you could get two and one across the aisle. You'd think it would only fill up more closer to when they upgrade as well. Having said that, you'd expect some Y+ to move to J and some J to F.

There is a FJ914 at 6am to Nadi, so T1 would be open from I say, 4am.
2.30am is probably too early.
Aerotel Sydney Airport would be the one to stay overnight at, as the Rydges is just too pricey.
I am a PGR member, so I do go with the Rydges, Aerotel is cheaper, my stays in the Rydges at T1 were all prior to Aerotel opening up, maybe next time I will give Aerotel there a go.

Thanks for the recommendation. Realistically I won’t be looking to check in anywhere near that early, but had just wanted to clarify what was technically possible.

Just another waffly, SYD KSA is not a 24 hr airport, so you could do OLCI on your device/home computer, but won't be able to slip/slide your passport into a machine reader with your airline at the airport at that time, so technically, OLCI yes, *unless you get that dreaded message, "check in at the airport"*, but bag drop and slip/slide passport into reader that early, at 2.30am, no, don't think so.
According to the bit above, you can check in at the airport from 2.30am!

Hello, where can I find the tax, surcharges, airport fee etc information on my QF e-ticket (or any airline e-ticket, really). ??

QF doesn't show the Flight Breakdown information on their e-tickets; however, it is available as you go through the booking on their website. Construct your booking with the Flights you need in Step 1 of the process, and then before you progress to 'Options' (Step 2), you have the ability to review the 'Flight Amount Breakdown' at the bottom of the screen under the Total Amount:
1684806480723.png
Clicking on that will open up the detailed breakdown for the QF and other carrier base fare/s, along with other taxes, fees & charges. The example below is a Flex Y return SYD-LHR in June:

Many other carriers do show the breakdown on their e-ticket receipt, with SQ (Singapore Airlines) & MH (Malaysia Airlines) coming to mind. They don;t always explain what they are though! SQ has detail like the QF booking view above, whereas MH only gives you the codes.

Cheers,
Matt.

Thank you @dairyfloss - much appreciated.

A question regarding Qantas Gold Status. I am on silver at the moment. Hoping to get Gold status soon. With gold if I am flying economy on a Oneworld ticket - do I get access to Oneworld lounges overseas? Example I am planning on a Cathay flight from Hong Kong to Sydney - can i access the Cathay lounge in Hong Kong with Gold status on an economy/premium eco ticket

Thanks in advance
