The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Hi
Has anyone recently tried to book flights to and from DXB or CMB or DOH? I keep getting the stupid error message

Excellent response @NM
From what I have learned here it is also worth OP @Aswong having the flight number, date and departure time ready to assist the agent when calling re " involuntary change".
Good luck with it @Aswong let us know the outcome and welcome to AFF ✈️
Yes having the details of your preferred alternative flight will definitely help you @Aswong. And do use the words “involuntary change” as often as you can. Both of those got me a good result recently.

I achieved gold recently for the first time and got bag tag/card a few weeks later. I got a silver pack a few weeks before that.
I've read the bag tags are unreliable and it's better to use the print out tags.
Thanks for the info 👍, I've been silver for a few months now and haven't received anything so thought I'd check

I just made silver on the weekend, updated online/app on Tuesday, and welcome email received Thursday advising a welcome pack would be sent by post, and prompting me to ensure details up to date. From this I'd hope it'd be sent next week?

I purchased two bag tags years ago when they first came out, and they're still going strong!

I’ve been using the bag tags for years and they have never once failed me. They are only for domestic flights, don’t work for international, but honestly they work very well.
no scanning issues?
You never lost luggage domestically? I forgot to include, Qantas staff were blaming the tags for the lost luggage.

The Qantas RFID bag tags ("coasters") are one of the best services I've seen around for passengers. When using them, the domestic bag drop is so quick and easy (do online check-in, place the bag in the bag drop machine, scan the boarding pass, send the bag off and you're done). And I've gotten my bag to the right destination every time without a fail.

I never dared rely on them because a good friend has had luggage misrouted both times she used the tags from VIC-MQL.

I think having printed tags reduces the risk of bag being put in the wrong flight.

I have done a LOT of domestic travel with QF - I was P1 for 4 years and have been Platinum for another 10 years, so that is a lot of trips, and no, I have not had lost luggage issues due to the QTags. Pre-COVID, I only had lost luggage twice in all that time - once between CBR and DRW via SYD when CBR flight was delayed resulting in crazy tight connection and the luggage did not make it (delivered on the next flight) and once CBR-BNE - no explanation offered, and also sent on the next flight. So not even lost luggage, really, just delayed.

I’m travelling a lot less post-COVID , but still have not had lost luggage or delayed luggage at all in this period (touch wood, long May that be so!)

So in my experience, the tags are great and save a lot of time getting printed tags and removing old printed tags from bags. Your mileage may vary (YMMV).

Hi, might be a question for the status run thread but I’m a new member considering the advantages of reaching silver with 165 status points to go before 31 October. I am on track to be in points club by August and just wondering if it’s worth waiting for points club and booking reward flights then or just doing a status run now to try and make up the missing points.

Within this short timeframe the only advantage I see of silver is I’m already almost half way there and keeping it will require less points next year, as I doubt I will have time to take advantage of the benefits of silver before my membership ends.

Unless you plan on flying a fair bit international while silver, not really sure the cost is worth the benefit here. Main benefits of silver is a Qantas lounge pass and use of priority check-in for international flights. It would be worth doing the maths whether the spend is worth that plus needing 50 SC the following year to maintain.

If you're points rich and would be doing some travel anyway, then perhaps doing an award flight status run might be worth it. 165 is a lot to get on awards flights without DSC though.

It's a bit like financial advice though. Everyone's situation is different. Only you know whether it's going to be worth it for your circumstances or not.

And just remember if you do decide to make silver before the end of your membership year on 31 October, you will immediately be silver until 31 October 2023, plus also for the following membership year as well until 31 October 2024 So you will have plenty of time to enjoy your benefits. If you don't earn the required status credits to retain silver by 31 October 2024, you will then drop back to Bronze.
