The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Lodged an ORC request today for QF J YUL-ORD-LAX-SYD instead of reticketed and flown AA J YUL-DFW / QF J DFW-SYD. Received a response very quickly (~45 mins) and noted that my outbound was unchanged (QF J SYD-YVR) and that they're reviewing the three requested return flight sectors.

The points and SCs from the actual return flights flown and credited have since disappeared of my activity. Hopefully to be replaced by the three original. That'll be 40 SCs extra plus it'll trigger a LB for another 50 SCs (as well as 2x squiggles).

Will keep you posted!

Edit: I’m also now expecting quite a few more QBR points when this goes through!
Well, I had to call to get mine to credit as originally booked - but happy with the result.
Funny(?) thing, SYD+1 used my exact same email (just replaced copies of BPs) and that request was processed next day in full…. 🤷‍♂️

Great to know! My attempt to reroute to generate extra SCs wasn't possible in the end, so, hope to follow in your footsteps in a few months.

I have several Qantas lounge invites I want to give to a friend with a family (2 adults 2 children). Do they need an invite for each child (both primary school age) or just the parents? No status for any of them.

Yes, one pass for each guest - including kids.

Hi all, I recently discovered when booking some flights that all my Qantas points had expired. I didn't know they did that and didn't receive any notification that they were due to expire/had expired. (I thoroughly checked my emails and that the email notification settings were turned on on the Qantas website.)
Apparently, they expired on the 1st of March 2022. Is there any way to get them back or is it just too bad? :(

You could have transferred your points to a family member who has an active account.

If they'd known they were expiring, which Qantas is not good at communicating. (My mum got caught out by this several years too)

The expiry terms are advised when you join.

Whenever you log onto Qantas website and look at activity you see the below banner at the top

Given you do not need to fly to earn/use the 1 point every 18 months, I'd say anyone whose points expire isn't very engaged in the loyalty program and certainly not an actual Frequent Flyer.

Yes Qantas could send an email reminder, but I suspect those not engaging with the program also are not reading the spam that Qantas sends out almost daily.

Good luck if you manage to get a challenge to reinstate them, but given you did not notice they had expired for over 18 months after they did I'm not sure Qantas will offer anything.

Sometimes it is a challenge in itself to earn those non-flyer points, especially if you are not an Australian resident.

You dont have to be an Australian resident to burn a couple of points on a charity donation via the Qantas marketplace or shop online for a gift to deliver to a friend or family in Australia.

TBH if you are a non-resident (unless temporarily) and not flying QF at least once a year QFF probably isnt the best program for you.

LT GOLDen handcuffs!

But then you should be aware of the Red Planet surveys, charity donations, shopping etc to keep active.

I'm betting most of those who have their points expire haven't even heard of LTG.

It's a matter of flying often enough, and once every five years doesn't cut the mustard! So the points are transferred to my active account. The flying gives lounge access and other partner benefits, e.g free seat selection. There is no other option.

I should say not my account, which is healthy, but Mrs Bs. If Mrs B flies, it is with me, but i will explore the other means of maintaining points. Thanks for the info.

ouch. Sorry this happened. While others are correct that the expiry terms are laid out when one joines and on the QFF site, it's not exactly user friendly. There were times where QF would put a "your points expire..." into the usual QF newsletters, which you may have passed on by if you had no reason or desire to fly (specially 2021/22 period).. Not defending them here - because other loyalty systems I've dealt with have been much more transparent and clear about such things.

However, give QFF a call on 13 11 31 and explain the situation. Hopefully they'll give you a challenge to get them back (as outlined).

And in future, doing things like linking to woolies rewards is an easy way to keep points from expiring, or even just pop QF wellbeing (I think tat's what it is) on your phone to track steps etc and earn a few points just doing every day things and account will be kept active without thinking about it or doing anything special).

good luck to get them back. Many may think 39k points is not a lot, but it's definitely worth something and I can understand your dismay.

Does subscribing to the Red Email put you in the loop so you get alerts about your points?

Honestly.. who knows?!

I believe it's the "newsletters" preference, but honestly this shouldn't be a specific opt-in for customers - they should be transparent. I had thought (via anecdotal posts here) that QFF had been sending people emails about expiring points in recent years, but maybe not - or not to everyone. I have had regular activity for decades, so can't personally attest to any experience here unfortunately, but this is an area where QF has most definitely had a poor history of communicating clearly with their customers - and I think that's not fair.
