The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

If you are lucky, they could.
Depends on how full that first flight is, the LST - MEL one, ...
Also, I guess depends on how helpful the LST staff are.
With QF, (thought you were flying VA, sorry, post edited by me), if you have higher tier QF status, you could get the HBA call centre, but if not, you would get the QF ones in 4 different locations, and they might want a fee for the move to the earlier flight.
First flight from LST to the mainland could be busy, as it would have to get lots of travellers to MEL to meet int flights.
Best of luck, you could try to phone up for the move to the earlier flight, and see what happens.

@AustraliaPoochie Great, thank you. We will definitely try!

My partner is Gold and I feel like I've read somewhere that Hobart is for Platinum and above. Might still be worth calling and see what they say.

Really appreciate your help.

@AustraliaPoochie now that's a thought, thank you!

Would the LST staff be able to assist with getting on an earlier MEL-SYD flight too or only LST-MEL?

With the call centre, do you mean I could ring them and see if they could swap to the earlier flights (while remaining on reward seats)? If so, am I best to do this now or closer to?

Thanks again.
I would NOT advise talking to the call centre as they don’t always have the systems or skills to make changes and as reported on this forum many many people have ended up with their reward seats wrongly cancelled or adjusted. And they will definitely charge you a change fee as you will be requesting a change. Even though your transfer time is tight in the end that is QF’s problem to manage.

That said I totally agree with @AustraliaPoochie that it’s worth turning up early and asking politely if they can move you to an earlier flight on the day. It often happens that they can and they almost never charge for doing this. It’s worth asking in LST if they could move you up
For the MEL-SYD flight but don’t worry if they say no. Ask again on arrival in MEL.

Thank you @Seat0B, duly noted!

We'll be sure to get there for the early flight and fingers crossed they can move us.

If there are seats on the day of, there's a very very good chance they would. Common sense usually applies and most check in staff do understand international connections - specially @ SYD. Good luck and enjoy your flights.

I happened to look at my LT SC earnings vs this year and noticed it wasn't the same, was our rollover from last year not counted?

Rollovers don't count. Once a new membership year opens, any rollover amount is removed from the prior year total, and added back into the current, so LT remains the same.

Cheers,
Matt.

I've just booked 4 * J QF127 SYD-HKG awards to fly next week using QFF points. Somehow, it cannot show the seatmap to allow us to select seats, but can only select preferences (Window, Aisle etc). Is this normal? Is it because QF doesn't know which version of the A380 it is deploying on that date? How can I select the seats to ensure that we all seat together?

The allocation of seats available to Bronze members is exhausted (well, at least looking for 4 seats).

All available seats will open up at T-80.

You can check on ExpertFlyer what seats are actually free v blocked.

SC related Question. If I book a flight in Flex Y then get the call centre to change the flight to J, would it now earn J SC? (not as an upgrade).

Yes, if it’s a fare difference (rather than points or bid upgrade).

On that note, I just thought of something, Can I change from Flex Y to Saver J ?

My whole point is that I can't book online a mix of Y and J using a voucher, I was told by an oz sounding person just then that they can't do that either with a voucher (can for a new booking) so I was thinking of ways to do this.

Experiment using the “Change” button to see if it lets you rebook from Flex whY to J. I don’t think I’ve ever tried but I’m sure someone else here might have.

But if it lets you do it and retickets in J, you’re good to go.

Thanks for that. Interestingly, after I added my QR Gold number, the system recognised me as OW Sapphire. However, I still don't have the ability to pick my seat for 4 people. But I also noticed that only 3 seats are available for selection in J in Expertflyer, as they are in the F Class section. Rest are either occupied or blocked.

Another question, is there a way to preview the in-flight menu on QF like SQ? I am trying to see if I get my kids (age 8 and 11) kids meal, or just standard inflight options on QF127.

Unfortunately not - they were offering a pre-selection service for a while, but all that is gone since covid.

Best bet is likely to see if anyone has travelled recently on the same route, and can get you a sample menu. In the past I've ordered kids meals on QF (Y & J), and when it's [invariably] been something my kid wouldn't want, they offered to swap the meal portion for whatever available option(s) might have been suitable from the standard offerings. If in doubt on either, fill 'em up in the lounge, and BYO a bunch of snacks!

Edit to add: found that there was a fairly recent flight review with pics of the Y inflight menu for QF127d (a delayed, next day departure) here:

Cheers,
Matt.

Answer to this is yes.

I was told that I couldn't use GV to book a mix of Y and J and do a name change. So I ended up booking Y and flexY, then called agent and got them to change the Flex Y to J. Other than having to deal with the call centre, this is I guess the way to solve this IT issue.

If memory serves, I think Select on Q Eat went the way of the dodo long before COVID. A shame because it was really handy and did work.

For a time they even offered it in Y and had an online only option. I recall an excellent duck a l'orange once.

Correct. The online exclusive option went first before the whole scheme was abandoned.
