The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Hello. Silly noob clarification please.

Qualification (& requal) for P1 is 3600 SC of which atleast 2700SC on QF marketed flights.

Marketed means flight could be on other airline metal, but marketed/sold as a QF flight number. So a flight on AA metal BOS-LAS sold as QFxx_x count towards the 2700SC - correct?
Yes.

Used to ne QF/JQ metal only iirc, but this appears to have been relaxed to "QF flight number" - and no mention of JQ oddly) now.

Question for the AFF experts re: multi-city bookings please... is there a maximum number of segments one can actually book on a given multi-city itinerary?

I've (finally) got the booking engine giving me some results (after my earlier challenges), but now it's trying to tell me that there's a 12 segment limit? Just not sure if that's a limitation of the booking engine, or if it's a carrier limit for multi-city bookings? ITA Matrix will price up a multi-city fare for me, but I just can't seem to get the Qantas booking engine to do the same thing.

Appreciate any insights!

16.

But good luck getting the multi-city engine to get that far.

Anything past about five or six sectors usually requires the call centre.

The 16 sector limit harks back to the days of paper tickets.

Thanks @Captain Halliday - I will need to contact the call centre anyway to book, but was just trying to price it out in the meantime. Would it be fair to assume that if I can price it via ITA Matrix, then it should (theoretically) be workable as a multi-city booking through the call centre?

Not sure, but my understanding is that it’s just an airline specific search engine.

In other words, it’ll just keep returning results and may not recognise any specific airline limits.

You might be better using the multicity tool and entering your planned routing a few sectors at a time to validate.

If you can get it all to work as sum-of-the-parts, then the only issues to be wary of from there are married segments and too many sectors.

Thanks for the advice!

The paper ticket limit was 20 sectors.

That vanished to become a 16 sector limit when E tickets became mandatory.

As someone who bought a DONEx every year for 16 years up to 2019, when covid killed it, I was p!ssed off when they brought in 16 sector limits, after numerous 20-sector RTW itineraries.

Gosh, those big, fat 20-sector paper tickets were fun!

Heh yes. I remember pretty similiar with Star RTW fares. Those carbon paper ticket stock in blocks of 4 FC's iirc stapled together. At one point circa 2000 there may have been 20 or even more allowed, but they too imposed limits at some point (I think because mileage runners were taking the p15S with multiple short sector hops and the like - at least that is what I was led to believe was one of the reasons).

At one stage last Century there was no segment limit. 🤯

But that was before my time.

In 2005 I purchased an ex CMB DONE4 for $6000. The limit was 20 segments by then so the paper "ticket" had 5 blocks of 4 vouchers stapled together.

So bit of a daft question so forgive me. I plan to travel from Sydney to Perth for the first time in my life. My understanding is that it departs from the international terminal in Sydney - do I have to physically go through the immigration machines to zap my passport, or is there another route for Perth travellers? Also, similar question for my way back to Sydney?

For a domestic flight departing from Int’l terminals, you must go to a staffed immigration desk, and present some government ID like a drivers license.
No need for a passport, and you shouldn’t go through the e-gates.

They’ll stamp your boarding pass and put a D sticker on it.
Same for arriving - go to a staffed immigration desk and don’t go through the e-gates.

Same arrangements on your way back

Thanks! I've never thought of this scenario before so glad to know the answer!
Do note that apart from QF5/6 (Rome) and the new QF33/34 (Paris), all other QF flights from SYD to PER depart from T3 Domestic. Usually with a QF 6xx flight number.

In PER, all QF flights depart from T3/T4. If returning on one of the international tag flights you have those extra steps mentioned above and arrive back at SYD T1 (International). Otherwise, you arrive at SYD T3 flying on QF 6xx.

That orange stickered BP does not allow you duty free purchases.
Also, be prepared for an terminal and aircraft swap, ie, you have to short notice, go to T3 instead of T1 and get onto a 737.
They (QF) do an equipment swap occasionally.

Years ago, they used to do a lot more of these "domestic passenger on an international flight" scenarios.
You also have to go through international security screening, so give it a bit more time than domestic, as there are a lot more people going through immigration and international security, than domestic at SYD T2 and T3.
I have done it (SYD - MEL) as in your scenario several times.
HLO no LGAs, or only in less than 100ml in clear container etc.
Nice to try that 787, but give it a bit more time on departure, and on arrival.
You also dont get to keep the orange stickered BP, as you will give it to staffed counter, on your arrival into T3 at PER, it will be like you giving your IPC (incoming passenger card) on arrival into Aus.
===
At T1, if you do not receive email or sms to go to T3 (equipment swap), go to the T1 QF counter to check in, you wont be able to do OLCI either, as they need to see your document, and issue you a paper BP (with orange sticker).
Then go through outgoing security screening, hands akimbo, stand sideways, legs apart, once clear, get your BP with orange sticker, show the ABF officer, he/she might note it, (not sure if they will still stamps it), as Aus now does not stamp passports, or marks it, then you go to your gate, or if you have lounge access, go there first.
Then to flight.
On arrival at PER, go through to ABF immigration incoming, show your BP, they either mark it or stamp it, and then you go through AQIS DAFF, and then, just before going out into public area, hand in your orange stickerd BP.

For Gdm73, just by a small chance, if you get, and that is an if, you get notification to go to T3, just know its very most likely that your flight will be a 737.
If that happens, go to the T1 international to domestic screening point at T1, via the long walkway, explain your situation, and get them to print you a domestic BP, and get the internal road QF bus from T1 to T3.
Hope you do get the 787 tho, to try at least once, as domestic passenger on a international flight.
I was very excited, when I did get to succeed several times, both with QF and JQ.

Thanks for the tips! Have not booked the flight yet so unsure of the exact model..
If you have not booked, note that the flights < QF400 are the international terminal ones (eg QF5). The rest (eg QF6xx) are domestic, and all that international terminal stuff is not relevant.

Almost all the flights are purely domestic. These "international tag" flights are very limited.

Did you log in and check your account on the qantas points club page of the desktop site?

Sometimes it just appears there as a pop up with the code and the email is either lost or a bit late.
