The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Not sure if it fits here. I have some Qantas Hotels vouchers. If I book Qantas Hotels using the voucher, and then later I had to cancel my booking, will I get the value of the vouchers back?
Sadly not @kamchatsky but I have read, you may be lucky and be able to change the date if that works for you, would need to do it over the phone though.

Is there anyway to select dates past the 353 search limit? It's just funny being able to see possible reward seats available in the search results 7 days out but unable to click on and browse those dates.

For revenue flights, I don’t think so.

For CR, I’ve had luck in the past by selecting the latest possible date available in the calendar. Tick “flexible with dates”. Hit search, then you should be able to search past the 353 limit for partner airlines that release earlier than that (pending availability).

not sure if the same is possible using multi city tool. Someone else may know the answer

Well no, as QF do not release inventory post 353 days out so you can't book anything.

Just checked again. If you do a search for 353 days out, then click back to 352 (not entirely sure why this step is needed), you can then click forward to browse the specific availability for the 7 days after day 353.

It’s a bit clunky but it works.

It’s been like that for as long as I can remember. Pretty sure the multi-city can get to the same result by clicking on the last date the step forward a week.

Sorry forgot to mention I was looking at non-QF stuff (specifically CI to TPE in this case).

By clicking forward do you mean only scrolling and browsing the dates at the top or actually being able to click and load the dates past 353? And does this only work for QF metal CR stuff?
eg. You can select September 1st 2025 in the search window, then once the results load it shows possible reward seats available an additional 7 days out as per below but they're unclickable.

Just a little query - does the SYD QF domestic club feature computers that can be used for those without devices to attend to a little online work?

Oh, well then, damn!

I suppose then that the computers in the ZQN and AKL Hiltons have also been removed since. I know I might be oldschool and traveling lighter than some, but as JT's signature quips:

"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one!"

Actually being able to click and load the dates past 353. You have to click from day 353 back to day 352 (eg from 2 Sep to 1 Sep) before it should then let you go forward (to 3 Sep & behind).

Only for non-QF metal rewards, as QF do not release anything until 353 days out. Not sure what CI release schedule is like, but there may be some availability there beyond 353 days.

Hi guys,
I am looking to book return melbourne to Lax flights next year. I cannot see any business class flights available on the dates that I want to travel however classic rewards economy is available. If I book the economy reward flight than can I request to be upgraded to business by paying with points? Or would that not work as there are not business reward seats listed on those days? When you request an upgrade when do you find out if the request will go through.

Thanks,

You can apply for an upgrade from a classic reward economy, to a classic award business. But according to the uograde calculator it’s gonna cost you 109,000 points. To buy business outright is only 108,000. Not sure how that works of it that’s an error on the upgrade calculator?

You can request an upgrade as soon as you book, but it won’t be decided until the week before departure. Your status determines the order in which your upgrade is processed. Platinums can find out up to 7 days before departure, bronze might only find out on the day.

Unfortunately, it's how it works - Qantas penalises those who book an Economy Classic Reward and want to upgrade - the total cost (if the upgrade is successful) is always higher - I guess it's due to the lower taxes and fees applied? I'm probably being a bit generous to Qantas here.

Availability for Australia - USA in Business Class on Qantas is quite low at the moment, although if you're looking well in advance and you're Bronze status, you aren't able to see Business Class seats on Qantas beyond 297 days prior to departure. The good thing about booking reward seats is that cancellation fees are relatively low, at only 6,000 points - it might be worth locking in the Economy flights now, requesting the upgrade, and then look for a better option in the meantime? Up to you, of course.

I knew it was expensive to upgrade an award, but to actually charge more than the business class seat itself is quite a bold move! Fair point about the fees and charges.

QF is one of the few (or only?) I know of that even allows a points upgrade on an reward ticket tbh (except J to F). Yes, ridiculous price I agree, but at least it's an option. I can't think of any other program that has this (but no doubt others do this - QF is hardly a leader!). So while it's very poor value, it is still a feature imo.
