The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Okay so I might have found an option, however would I be able to link a complimentary lounge invitation with QF292 (SIN to SYD operated by Finnair for Qantas)?

Technically it's a QF flight number but just the flight operated by Finnair metal.

For all intents and purposes this is a qantas flight, with qf having leased the plane. It may say ‘finnair’ on the outside, but the contract of carriage is with qantas. That’s different from a code-share.

Whether or not you’ll be able to link your lounge pass at such a busy period is another issue you might want to consider. The lounge will be at capacity at that peak time, and lounge passes may not be able to be used.

I believe you could link your pass as it's QF wet lease. The issue may be that being the busy holiday season, capacity restraints in place. Changi is one of the best airports as we all know, can think of worse places to be in without a Lounge @MelbFlyer

Edit : as @MEL_Traveller just said!

Thankyou, I did also think about this and am also resigned to the fact that I may have to use a paid lounge just in case the complimentary invitations aren't accepted due to being within a peak period.

There's no black and white on it though, other than "the use of complimentary lounge passes may be suspended during peak travel periods such as school holidays".

It would be helpful to be black or white if it is suspended or not, rather than saying "may". I guess I'll find out only once I eventually book a ticket and try to link an invitation.

My understanding is that you will be able to Link your complimentary Lounge Invitation, but access to the Lounge may be declined by QF Lounge Reception staff due to capacity limitations at the time you attend.

7. Accessing the Eligible Lounge

7.1 Lounge Access is subject to these Terms and Conditions and to the Lounge entry terms and conditions.

7.2 Where Eligible Customers are declined Lounge Access due to capacity or operational reasons, they may request for a reinstatement of the Invitation, which is at Qantas' reasonable discretion.

Anyone know what’s going on with MU CR seats missing from QFF (as mentioned up thread a while back) and here?

Trying to finalise a trip between Beijing-Xian-Shanghai or reverse and nada. I can see plenty of MU award seats on AF (so they exist) but nothing on QF. There’s also plenty of *A availability, but I don’t have enough UA miles for both…(haven’t crunched the numbers on converting VA to SQ).

We can book direct with MU for about A$400 ea as a fall back. The train is getting on the long side for XIY-PVG.

Hi all .... if I link a lounge invitation to my flight now and then my request for business upgrade is approved within 24 hours of my flight. What happens to the lounge invitation? Is it automatically returned to my account or do I need to request it be returned. Thanks all.

My understanding is that you will be unable to unlink a lounge invitation within 24 hrs of flight. However, the T&Cs state “At its sole discretion, Qantas may reinstate the Complimentary Lounge Invitation to unused status under certain circumstances, providing that the Complimentary Lounge Invitation has not expired.”
If you get Upgraded, give a try anyway.
If unsuccessful, ask at the Business Lounge reception.

Thanks everyone, I'll keep looking around for options :)

So I've been playing around with flights and dates etc, seems if I add another leg ie. MEL to SYD later in the year, the price of the entire itinerary goes down or stays the same.

Example:
SIN to MEL only / one-way ~ $SGD 1.1-1.2k
SIN to MEL and then MEL to SYD return (3 legs) ~ $SGD 1.1k (sometimes <$1.1k)

I know prices are subject to market forces and not necessarily only based on distance etc, however would it be too good to be true in that I could book the 2nd option for cheaper (ie. when getting to the final payment page, it'll fail)?

If that's the case and it's correct, I could theoretically have a return flight to SYD later in 2025 for the same price or cheaper than just getting SIN to MEL only.

Sounds too good to be true?

Thanks for the response. I'm not holding out much hope of an upgrade anyway.

I'm seeing a lot of references to J fares in the OWA thread. Isn't J full fare business class and if so, how are people booking it under a OWA?

I've booked a Classic Reward flight in business and it's U class so am wondering what the difference is.

It’s all about context.

In the thread to which you’ve referred, J refers to the cabin in which you’re travelling, not the fare bucket specifically.

Availability in the U buckets required for a classic flight award.

Does Qantas have any kind of student lounge access program tucked away? As a PhD student I travel both domestic and international regularly, but can't quite get to Gold FF. At 6'5 tall, flying is an absolutely horrendous experience and would love to be able to stretch out in a lounge during stopovers! I have googled etc and found nothing, but thought some of the hive here may know of a solution.

Same one as for everyone else - Qantas Club?
If your doing that much flying, the cost per flight of QC should be justifiable.

If you can plan ahead booking flights during DSC promo can make reaching gold very affordable.

Also you can earn Qantas lounge passes via credit cards and PC/PC+

Thanks for the information. Re: credit cards, our PhD salaries are treated as scholarships and not true income, then the teaching is paid on top but as a casual employee, so the banks won't approve a credit card. In fact, last time I remortgaged they took my Platinum VISA away as we were switching banks and I haven't been able to get another one since :(

Was hoping someone could help explain how to book Emirates first class seats with Qantas points (Syd-CHC). I'm searching for Oct next year and J class seats are showing on the Emirates flights but not first. There is no option to search for first through qantas. Thanks in advance.
