The Qantas Newbie Questions Thread

Quick straw poll please... apart from stating the obvious reasoning that J > whY, what are people's thoughts on whether it's worth trying to upgrade from whY to J on QF3 SYD>AKL?

Considerations I'm grappling with...
  • It's only 3 hours...
  • QF3 is "proper" Qantas J (as opposed to glorified Y+)
  • I've (somehow) never flown on a Dreamliner before
  • I'd be needing to upgrade both DejaBrew+1 and myself (or optionally, upgrade myself only and be in the doghouse for the remainder of the trip 🤣)

MrsK and I did that in 2023 to get J on points from Canberra to Auckland return, and our first trip on a 787. It allowed me to get MrsK to experience the First Class Lounge in Sydney, before I dropped off Plat. The timings worked well, arriving into Auckland early enough to head into the city and stay the night, before flying on to Samoa the next day. Coming back, we stayed at the airport the night before, to avoid too early a start. The experience in the Auckland "First" Lounge was very different too. It was worth it, considering the alternative was a 737 in J. Big difference.

As to your last dot point, only you can decide - choose wisely :)

Hang on... is this some obscure unwritten law of straw polls? 🤔
Yes, this is an obscure unwritten (until now) interpretation of clause five of the AFF general rules, which requires that we "respect your fellow members", so I took that to mean straw polls were binding (as a demonstrated sign respect) 🤣........... but seriously, if you can have fun, do it while you can :) and what better way to do it than in a "proper" J seat. Take it when you can is my vote.

Go for it @DejaBrew
Life is too short to sit in whY and who knows what those points will worth with any further enhancements.

I have done the J on LATAM and JQi (full front seating) run as a dom pax on an int flight (SYD - MEL), and the AirNZ 787s (reverse herringbone), but not the QF ones.
More chances of an upgrade, as you are WP, and there are more seats in J on the 787, granted, more pax will be going onto the US, so maybe 6 seats will be available, for the SYD - AKL flight run, vs maybe 3 available if on the 737.
Seeing that QF only does the 330 on the BNE - AKL flight run, its quite too narrow for me on the 737.
Bit more privacy too, on the 787, as it has that shield (the QF planes) than the 737 that does the ditch hop, where everyones a pleb, even in 737 J, as everyone can see you when they walk past.
