The Qantas Singapore Lounge

And I thought food fights only occur in school canteens...

At least the QF lounge has enough self-contained showers for everyone to take a cold shower and calm down. :)

Again, why?

I can have chicken, beef with Cathay.

I can have beef, lamb with Emirates.

I can have lamb, chicken with Malaysia.

I challenge you to exactly describe the dishes of chicken, lamb and beef served by Cathay and Malaysia and convince me they are Western. I'm going to go out on a limb and bet they are not.

Last dishes I remember having in the Cathay lounge are biriyani; some chicken dish that was stewed Asian style but used a tomato base (reminded me of a Filipino dish - some may argue that is Spanish); some vegetarian puffs and Chinese-style pork buns; of course there are also instant cup noodles. The only true Western stuff was prepackaged salad bowls in the fridge and prepackaged sandwiches in cling wrap.

I don't know about the last time I had steak from a buffet but I can bet unless it's been freshly cooked it's probably been hardening up there like a slipper in the Australian outback heat. No thanks.

I know I am getting nowhere in this thread and that is sad.

And you have no one to blame but yourself for that. Argue properly and with some respect and you might find some comes back.

This thread is entertainingly vibrant tonight..

We have both Asian and Western options tonight :o  (literally: at least for a start, I'm part Asian but Australian-born; not sure about the rest of them here....)

Though I still disagree with JohnK on the food side, I was in the BA BKK lounge and 3 of 4 desktops were in use. I was quite amazed, I truly thought most people would have their own. Whether the SIN QF lounge needs one is another matter, but it did make me realise.

Oh, and OpUp!

As you well know, I'm also Australian-born & have strong links towards Asia inclusive of a wonderful appetite & open mindedness for the multi cuisines. :D

I suspect Johnk would have been happier with tonight's selections.

The plated dishes were more western Asian choices, as was the hot dish.

But as they say the proof is in the pudding, or creme bruleee.

Very Western I would say, admittedly more so than my last visit. Would like to see some more 'normal' salads though.

Also saw a sign with instructions for the Press Reader and Zinio downloads which was not present at the SYD F Lounge, and indeed PressReader did not allow free downloads as it did in Singapore.

Unfortunately despite the lounge not being busy, WiFi is at snails pace. 10mins just to pull down The Economist. Zinio selection is about 40 mags though some seem to be Singapore editions.

Finally also took a photo of the wireless printer sign which I think has changed.

Note that there is also a new wireless said QF-Printer (albeit presently WPA-2 secured) so may be some changes afoot.

I will be visiting this lounge in the next few months - and not a moment too soon. The suspense (and varying opinions) as to whether it is good, bad or indifferent is killing me. :)
But I will make these points in the interim:
1) Sparkling wine is sparkling wine, no matter what geographical region it is produced in or what it is called. All down to the quality of grape, terroir, and the skill of the winemaker.
2) to suggest there are 'no' Western food options (oh, except pasta which I don't like) defies logic. The pasta *is* a Western food option, just one the poster does not like (FWIW I'm not usually big on lounge pasta either - though I usually like Asian food also, so not necessarily s big issue for me).
3) it ain't difficult to provide a/some PCs and printer(s) - not everyone wishes to lug a device around as well (again, FWIW, I usually do, but would welcome the opportunity to use a lounge-provided one from time to time).
What a robust little place this forum becomes from time to time. :)

What a load of rubbish, there are western options including salads and Australian Ham, hamburgers and club sandwiches, just because you may not choose those options or be in the lounge when they are on offer does not mean they don't exist! And lets not forget the Creme Brûlée, might fine Asian dish that .

Markis Hamburger not always available review my previous post on what was offered. ( Bacon and Egg roll and a ham and cheese roll does not make either a hamburger or beefburger!)

Salad is not a meal as far as I am concerned

Creme Brulee is a desert not a main meal and has only just been put back on the menu.

Yes the new lounge is better than the old F lounge however I feel it is no better than a cafe in an industrial building and it is focused on Asian meals.

Hamburgers!!!!

Read my previous post on the QF offering of hamburgers last week and I am sure you would agree that this is not a viable or regular consistent offering

Which is why the Club sandwiches were also mentioned.

The Qantas club is not advertised or promoted as a place where you can get a "meal", but rather a "refreshment" or "snack" be it domestic or international business, on that score with regard western snacks options, there are plenty on offer in the Singapore lounge.

That may be so for domestic, but for international they offer "fresh, delicious dining options" which, to me, signifies a meal.

I hear that you don't win friends with salad ;) :D though some would disagree with you here depending on the salad. No, seriously I know what you're getting at. :)

Well, I can definitely agree with this statement. Maybe not the "cafe in an industrial building" bit, but so be it.

I have to admit that we all confess that whilst this is strictly true, the real expectations of at least 90% here are that one can get a "meal" in these lounges. Call it a warped reality but that is what it is.

...
One PAX's "fresh, delicious dining option ..." may be another PAX's "poison" - we are not all the same, but as is the norm, the most commercially acceptable provision for the majority rules.

Such is life ...

My point was simply that "dining" means something more substantive than a refreshment or snack, i.e. a meal.

Good comment, we aren't all the same eh

I can also report that on Friday evening when I was there they had some nice oven roasted chicken with (I think) rosemary / other herbs that I would certainly not classify as Asian ~ more of an Italian influence I think and it was well-cooked and quite tasty. For me, the food offered was just fine ~ quite a few fresh and tasty salads also. And mini-lamingtons...
