The totally off-topic thread

Shows how hard business is, full stop. People are spending money on experiences these days, but I guess that isn't necessarily at the top end.

Emphasis on "criminal" - can't say I'll waste a second mourning his passing.

There was someone in a thread (maybe this one) who said no matter who it was that died, it is unfair to not show any sort of respect, let alone celebrate, someone's death. I think this comment was made around the time that Margaret Thatcher died.

Another high end restaurant closing in BNE.

Ortiga restaurant to close

Shows how hard business must be at the top end of food service.

Depends on the outcome they wanted. Some restaurants decide to continue and roll with the punches, without a significant, if any, dip in the quality. But, such is life. It is a conscious decision of the owner(s). Sometimes it's just a decision that they don't want to do this any more and want to refocus or try another venture, and so it comes to pass to the chagrin of those who have enjoyed the place.

Then there are other restaurants which never brought in the crowds at all, and hence they close.

A good long standing restaurant is not solely a function of being a great venue with a reputation to serve great food in a great environment. It's also a strong function of commitment by the owner(s), no matter how many times (if any) the baton passes. The two important factors impact on each other in many ways but also have a subtle parts which are mutually exclusive.

I often find that a wonderful dining experience is usually at the upper echelon of desires.
IME Much of BNE is often very attractive in quality fresh cuisine & service at reasonable prices. :D
Sad that well reputed establishments such as the mentioned have to close due to lack of patronage &/or changing values & habits.

Given he stated he killed (but not charged with) 19 people I think there are exceptions to the paying respect to the dead.

Comparing this with Thatcher is not on.

I think that depends on strongly on whether one was affected or not (in both cases - Reed and Thatcher).

Totally disagree.
He was a self confessed murderer.
one case proven in court but he got off on self defence.

In both cases, you have people who detest both of those for the same reason - their lives were destroyed. In one case, it involved death.

For the charge of having their life destroyed or deprived of liberty, that is the reason their deaths are being celebrated.

Anyway, it just goes to show that categorically, you cannot argue that it is wrong to disrespect or celebrate the death of someone. That was the point that someone made before - the dead do not deserve disrespect, but in fact there are cases where people find it perfectly socially acceptable. Those cases are never black and white - it will be subjective.

erkpod has a good point, too.

Could care less about chopper. I heard today of a lovely woman who simply died in her sleep - in her fifties, and perfectly well when she went to sleep. RIP B.

Did you mean "Couldn't care less about Chopper" - I'm guessing this to be so.

It does slightly make sense in it's original form, i.e. she could (stand to) care less about Chopper, and I'm sure it's clear she chooses to exercise that ability. :)

I think I had my american brain in. That's the way they express it. I think I was reading that news article that said the average USA person is dumber than the rest of the world or something. :-) Go figure. ;)

Also Philip Johnson's Bistro 111 is closing. He admitted poor choice of venue (issue with sun for patrons) along with general downturn.

Ecco is still going.

That was a weird venue with its split level!
