I needed a laugh. Due to 2 training days, I'm doing close to regular person office hours this week.

And to make the day sound even better, my wife has left me ... so .... in all fairness, I probably deserved it :(

Speaking of which, need to find somewhere to live in London quick smart.

Sorry to hear, Flashback. All the best.

I didn't saw it!

I didn't able to see it!

Which one sounds better?

I don't like either, but I can hear the first coming from a child who is still learning correct past conjugation of verbs.

So what you are saying anat01 in your great response is - we will just have to grit our teeth and give up - it's like sticking your finger in the dam (and damn!) wall. we can still be grammar naz_s in private though! I'm still tempted to carry a Texta to correct the errant and absent apostrophes!

Lots of the under 35s cannot count past 12 nor use English the way we were taught it in the sixties.
c u l8r does not really cut it unless of course you are driving at the speed limit on a country road attempting to do a text.
A very good exit strategy if you attempt this on our roads.

Well, I can count well past 12, and I learnt to speak properly. I'm also not a fan of text speak. Is it really necessary to rehash the old "Gen Y suck at xyz" again?

I'm a closet "Grammar naz_"; unfortunately, you don't get a good working reputation if you make it habitual (unless you're reviewing a paper, article or so on). Also doesn't help when your grammar is not 100% perfect (tall poppy in this country will slice you at the knees).

Why can't we all agree that good literacy and numeracy is important and it's not such a bad thing to be good at both of them?

No apostrophe ;) "learnt" (or "learned")

Are we really Gen Y, or do we straddle the line between generations? Either way, can't stop the broad brushing. Same deal when it comes to driving.

I think between us and the people who are going through high school now, there's a step change difference, so hard to believe we can be the same generation.

People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones :D - everybody is making mistakes today (although iPhone autocorrect may have got some - it's the one that needs a change).

[Damn, I re-read it twice to make sure of my spelling, grammar and punctuation :)]

I'm dobbing my boss in for inappropriate use of ellipsis.... He does it ALL THE TIME.... It drives me nuts.... Now, half the sales guys are doing it too....

Why is it when you are down everyone lines up for their turn to put the boot in?

I think if there's one thing that has really been true for me the past few days is that life really is what you make of it, even if you don't think so at the time. Give it a few days and reassess.

Amen to that, Flashback. You're sounding very philosophical this afternoon (morning your time). Good to hear ;)

I'm sensing from your post a certain kind of... dissatisfaction... but I just can't pinpoint it right now, but perhaps time will reveal the truth... if the truth is out there... :p :p

I think if written (or even spoken) communication is crucial to your bread and butter, you become good at using appropriate and accurate grammar, spelling and punctuation rather quickly, lest it'll likely cost you your job. Certainly, in many job ads now, "excellent written and spoken communication skills" is either a key criterion and/or addressable selection criterion. (What that actually means in practice is a whole different thing, though usually it can be reflected in your application and cover letter, let alone your interview).
