Took a trip to Straddie today, whales, Dolphins, Turtles, a leopard shark at Amity pt, and a koala on the way home. A satisfying day of wildlife spotting. Not to mention a nice picnic lunch at Pt Lookout.

For those old enough, can you describe the feeling or change in your life when log tables became somewhat obsolete in favour of affordable pocket calculators that could do the same?

Log tables were provided when I sat for the leaving and matriculation certificates. BYO slide rule, however. In fact, I knocked the book off (reaches up to bookshelf). It's called Physical and Mathematical Tables by John B. Clarke C.B.E. M.A. LL.D, Oliver and Boyd Ltd, London, revised edition 1957.

Pocket calculators weren't affordable went they first became available. $29 was the price, which was about my weekly wage at the time. And they chewed through batteries fast. It wasn't for another five years they became more common in offices.

The first calculator I bought was a credit-card sized Canon I got to take overseas for currency conversions. That was in 1980 and it was $20 IIRC. That would be fairly expensive in today's money.

Anyone struggle a lot with finding birthday presents for others?

If you care too much, then yes you will often struggle. I don't find it too hard (think of themes, look around, think of what they've told you in the past), but it's more the fact I dislike celebrations etc that makes it more challenging at times.

I got my first calculator when in my second last year of school, 1976. Dad brought it back from Europe. I was able to blow my statistics class wide open . Still used slide rules up to my first year of physics at Uni but fortunately HPs started coming in about then (IIRC and I probably don't ). When did the HP 25c first come out? RPN and all!! .

Ahh, the joy of RPN. I think I was still using a log book until the early 80s in school.

Meanwhile my memories of calculators in high school are graphic calculators, that we could load up with games, exam notes, etc.

A Pain Clinic maybe a better option for you and they do a good work up they like to know what they are treating Â
It's probably worth a try but I get the impression they're not that good.

They had my dad on morphine for his pain. It was causing him other issues so we/doctor told them to stop giving him morphine. They did but what we didn't know is they still gave him another opioid drug. Almost killed him.

In the Seventies I can remember my Dad buying a Texas Instruments 56, but to a 11yo, it's wonder was not it's mathematic ability, but the fact if held upside down the screen could display "shell oil or big coughs"
