Scary morning this morning when we found our dog sprawled on the floor unable to move. Half an hour of cuddles and she was back on her feet looking for food and water. Poor thing isnt getting any younger (shes 15) and has gone to my mums to be babysat for the day. Though work did ask why I was there....

Little bit out of date but a few groups stand out in the jail population in Australia.

It would be interesting to see the percentage of prison population to general population who identify with each ethnic group. Would the percentages be similar across all ethnic groups?

Hope she's better soon. Be aware that dogs are generally heat-intolerant (think that major canine predators tend to inhabit cooler climates, felines warmer climates) and that temperatures over 22oC can heavily stress a dog. Add that its age and general fitness will not be equivalent to a young dog and it's essential that on a warm morning you have the dog inside with the AC and fans on, perhaps a damp towel for it to sit on and so on.

What size dog is she? My initial thoughts are - large dog musculo-skeletal issues, small dog cardio-vascular issues. Has she had a vet check lately? If not, perhaps have a vet check up to ensure her heart and general circulation are up to scratch.

She's a jack russell x mini foxie. She was inside and the house was relatively cool. She had peep and thrown up too. I wrapped her in a towel and held her and she perked up, and was able to walk, drink and eat. Mum's got her for the day so if there are any issues she will go straight to the vet. She spent three days in their care in feb/march with haemoragic gastro.

Is it "art imitating life"or "life imitating art"? Or do the Sitch team get sneak leaks of Ministerial thought bubbles?

The finale of Utopia had Jim pushing Tony for long-term thinking in infrastructure planning with a 22C (22nd century, not airline seat), converting a conference into a 22C Summit.

Yesterday, Greg Hunt, Minister for Cities, was in Melbourne for consultations with the Opposition leader (not the Govt? Liberal born to rule mentality?) spruiking the Coalition's newer kinder infrastructure plans, but declaring that "Melbourne is at a crossroads requiring a new vision for the year 2200." Utopia only wanted to go forward 85 years but Minister Hunt is thinking 185 years ahead.

Too right - Case in point: Neville "f'ing" Bartos! Drug dealer.

I guess all people from Neville's ethnic group must be drug dealers?

Now that was way off the mark.
See a few posts above mine.Greeks are involved in crime at 50% the rate of dinky di Aussies.

Putting aside that is the ratio of prison populations not the crime rate.

Lets explore those number a bit. It's the ratio of country rate to Australian rate per 100000 of total population. Total population of Australia including ethnicities. The greek population by ethnicity is maybe about 1 million - quick and dirty estimate, so roughly 25 times less than the rest of the population. I have no idea of the crime rate from that, but it isn't as simple as being 50%.

In any case, you have probably missed the context, not to mention missed the point.

how DARE you attack my right to freedom of speech. I'm allowed to generalise - Well used JohnK's generalisation that all people from certain ethnic groups ARE criminals! Just because one person from that group commits a crime.

No just Greeks born overseas.

And Greeks born in Australia have a ratio of one in your table.
Besides the example used by Medhead was using Greeks as an example in relation to a member with Greek heritage.
That is more than a generalisation.

No it wasn't. on that point you are making an assumption that is completely wrong. I was making the point that criminality cannot be attributed to ethnicity in an absurd way that matches the absurd generalisation made. A point that many people have made in thread. Most people would understand that my comment was absurd and not serious. It was also a pop fiction reference to a great comedic Australian actor's performance in a highly entertaining movie. I was attacking the topic not the man.

Now about your attack on me in making this slur about my motivations. That's the pot calling the kettle black, isn't it?

I didn't see an attack. Just a sweeping generalization that is supposedly medheads right to free speech.

Just my opinion.
Nice post.

Are you able to comment on why they have stopped commenting on the appearance of suspects of crime.

"He was approximately 170cm-175cm tall, around 90kgs, dark hair and blue eyes with Mediterranean complexion."

Why are we leaving race out of the description. Probably the most important piece of information of the description of the suspect. Who gets offended for this to be left out?

Except they don't leave it out? It's usually told as so-and-so appearance rather than saying they are of that particular race, because there are cases where I doubt people can tell the race straight from looks and be 100% correct all the time.

Smart criminals - if they exist - probably hide most of their features so you couldn't tell what "race" they are from the get-go. There will be a bit of skin exposed for sure, so you might be able to get their complexion / skin colour. If they happen to blab, you might pick up an accent. All that information is nominally reported on the news, let alone on crime alerts.

Wow just wow. Pretty much confirms my statement and I didn't have access to any statistics.

Well worth spending some time going through the Bureau of Crime Statistics web site. Very informative.

Any questions then give them a call - and you REALLY learn some new information.

If in NSW - have a look at how your local area compares. Despite the media reporting - high crime areas are not in the major cities or 'burbs.

Thanks. I thought it was quite obvious. But I guess you need to live in these areas and you will know.
