Not all the luxury items were to do with myself. The Burberry, The samsonite, the need for USB/Adaptors, the Apple Watch and the Clarins Men's range was my input.

Fashion can be functional and function can be fashionable. Would you necessarily think something functional is ugly? I think the two are not mutually exclusive. =)

In defense of the article, it is titled "Executive Style".

I guess my reaction to the article was, aren't executives who travel regularly more worried about function than fashion? Also I'm not sure how a USB charger can be considered a luxury gadget.

Whilst good looks and function are not mutually exclusive, if I really had to choose one or the other, I'd choose function.

Something which looks good but doesn't do what it should do is essentially a brick. At least something that works but looks rather ugly can usually be very easily dressed up.

Most products these days are not necessarily one being deficient in the other. One may just look better but have less functionality, and vice versa. For me, I'd usually pick the item which has better functionality rather than the one that looks better, however if the additional functionality is not very useful to me, then I might just choose the better looking one.

Some people have other aversion / attachment arguments which transcend anything to do with looks or functionality (or are deeply rooted in one of those).


iPhones may look better than almost all Android devices, and the same might be said about the user interface. But that alone doesn't sway my choice of smartphone.

Rather hot for my visit to Perth this weekend, Saturday was 35c and today another 35c day but at least it's not humid.

Last week I was off work for 2 days with a cold with laryngitis and now today it has returned to say that I am annoyed is an understatement. It's going to be tough to talk to people today some I have seen for a few months.
Back on the plane tonight at 10:30pm Virgin which will be from the new Virgin Terminal, interestingly our Qantas plane landed at gate 16 which I thought had been a Virgin gate.

Just watch the HKG ones - like many items for sale in the city on the fragrant harbour (think memory cards, photographic filters, and handbags), the streets are flooded with knock offs.

Still, for around $3 AUD a pair from Li Yuen Street markets, if you don't mind taking the risk of non-polarized lens, the counterfeits are usually quite convincing.

Same old rule applies: if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

I enjoy watching him play. He is a great stroke player. He does screw up the occasional shot (e.g. 17th), but is always calm under pressure, and IMHO one of our best golfers still in the country given the talent drain to the US tour.

Sunglasses Hat (AU) can be okay if you have coupons. Their "family and friends" coupon for 2+ pairs a few years ago was excellent. Could be stacked with cashback also.

I tend to be very careful with any branded products. If not buying through a codified sales channel, assume it is fake.

Unscrupulous Chinese department stores have been accused of trying to offload fakes on unsuspecting tourists and locals at crazy prices. Hong Kong is generally a bit better, but as always be vigilant.

Selection criteria aren't included with many jobs, but for those that have them, they can be a real challenge to answer.

It's a fine balance of conciseness and hitting the right tone with the supplied criteria. Even harder when you can't "template" fulfill all of the particular criteria, viz. now you still go for it but justify why you're still a fine choice even if you can't fulfill this particular criterion?

There's probably better ways I could have argued my position, but I was unfortunately running out of time. I'm not giving myself a better than even money chance, but let's see all the same.

Generally you see these types of hoops in governmental/Uni jobs. This now has leaked to the private section...

I really hate companies and recruiters that wont accept PDF formatted files, as some prefer Word because they can see various things with Word like how you formatted your page or track changes (Grammar naz_s). Plus some recruiters like Word as they manipulate your file before they give it a potential employer.

Oh and that is another thing, them wanting you re-enter the information from your CV/resume for their database/portal.

I slowly getting the disdain for HR like in "The Office".

I've made that decision earlier this year. My mistake was going solo. I'm having to turn down offers constantly due to existing commitments, and am now considering taking onboard some junior staff. If I had a partner(s) I think spreading opportunities and training junior staff would be been much easier.

Always the tough decision! I've been doing my own thing for about 15 years now and have never contemplated taking on a business partner. When I was consulting as a CEO of a small public company I found I wasn't a good people manager so that cured me of any desire to take on junior staff of my own. I don't advertise, have no web site and besides my core client, take on the jobs that interest me. I've even taken off 6 months when I've been into book-writing mode.Hard to do all that if there is some-one else pedalling away along side you.

And now I've ditched MYOB for Xero I have half a day a month back
