Also my first live gig, apart from an unexpected encounter with Adam and the Ants on the tube.

I saw Bowie at VFL Park. From a great distance, but I was so excited and kept telling my friend that so often that she told me to shut up.

Reading between the lines Neilson's motive for his Market Update really seems to have little to do with weighing up the market in China vs USA and more to do with reassuring Platinum's investors. Could it be that some have been heading for the exits and withdrawing their funds? Given Platinum's overweight exposure to Asia their valuations must have taken a hammering lately with big falls in Shanghai so it would be understandable if Neilson took a macho approach to "bluff" his way through. Understandable, yes, but reliable, no - if everything was going to plan my guess is that there would have been no need to comment.

His suggestion that Platinum is looking to use profits from shorting the US market to invest further in China is incredible - and not in a good way! Let's invest more in the worst performing market because it's cheap (after admitting that it's tainted by corruption and increasing factory closures). That sounds like a good strategy......not! Let's conveniently ignore the fact that the reason the US, AUS and EU markets have all dived in the past 10 days is because of China (with help from the oil price tanking). The US economy is actually performing comparatively well, with unemployment much better than ours and the latest figures showing further improvement.

But don't worry, Neilson says, consumer spending by the new middle classes in China will fix it all. I'm calling BS on that one.

I was out recently at dinner with two hockey teams, one from Sydney, one from Brisbane. It was about 9.30pm when one of the visitors asked me where the nearest bottlo was. I suggested that they hurry up & find one quickly as they all close at 10pm. There was shock from both the Brisvegians & someone from Melbourne who also was there.

They made it with 5 minutes to spare.

Spare a thought for those of us in Darwin, our bottle shops are still closed on a Sunday!:(

Luckily my AFF friends have filled the wine threads with great deals and I have filled the pockets of many a wine merchant as a result.

"I'm good for a month of Sunday's" as a certain generation might say!

Always had a rule in brisbane to be home before the sun came up. Then you can get to the beach. Another reason to oppose Daylight savings for Queensland.

Heres the think, it's a lock out. you can't get into a place after 1:30. But they don't kick you out, it stays open. The most bizarre place I ever drank was Darwin. Last drinks called, order 3, 1am light go up and the bouncers line up and push the crowd out the door with drinks in hand.

In any case, as my grandfather always advised "If you're not in bed by midnight, just go home. The girls left aren't worth it."

At least, knowing when the bottle shops close, one is able to do some forward planning to ensure that one does not run short of supplies. One can never have too much!
