I am asking if it's part of most cultures as it is part of our culture as well. As you said to show respect for the host that they have provided enough food.

I think Aussie culture is to clean the plate. Its just that my stomach is usually full well before most. Unless it is Thai red curry chicken and rice. I can wolf that down easily.

And its no wonder the nation's waistline is growing....

Or be like a French Woman and only eat to 80% of full.

Trying to organise a dinner for some friends this weekend. Rung a couple of places:

"We have a special super dooper set menu for Valentines Day - It's excellent value at $10 gazillion dollars for a set menu of food you don't want"

Ugh - I am in danger of cooking myself, or changing the date.

So if you cook yourself where would you start? And wouldn't it be painful?

I have yet to do anything more than burn my finger, and I would like to keep it that way. I am too old to taste good, Meat is best young...

I usually start by opening the bottle of wine, then realise it is a bad idea and hunt around for take away menus.

I think the horses died. ;)

Actually agree with you re the amount of utter rubbish dished out as 'entertainment'. But having said that there are shows I watch that others would dislike. I enjoy Survivor, Undercover Boss, Pawn Stars and so on.

It's just a matter of finding new shows and discarding the dross very quickly.

1) Don't say that about drross.
2) Horses in Bourbon Street - or Waikiki?
3) But you are probably right

In the time that I have been retired, SWMBO reckons that I cook far too much, both in quanity and time wise! Still I get enjoyment out of planning, buying and then cooking. Though I am mostly known for my "one pot wonders".

Cook to impress or cook to fill the stomach?

I have a nice piece of salmon defrosting in the fridge. I will fry it in oil shortly. I also have some egg plant and green peppers from home and fry those along with a few mushrooms. May even fry a couple of potatoes.

I love simple cooking. Requires little thought and more importantly no alcohol.

This sounds very familiar
