The totally off-topic thread

My 13 year old Mirage is now virtually worthless for insurance purposes but with less than 140,000 km and regular maintenance it is totally suitable for my needs. And yes it's a manual. Reckon there's a few more years in it yet.

Of course I do have 3rd party property insurance so if I hit you, you're covered. :p

Like Mum's 2002 Nissan Pulsar that I inherited. Paint going powdery, damage to one door edge from backing out of the garage with the door open. But starts first time every time, stops when you need it too, goes smoothly around corners, and with TPP a good safe ride for to/from the station etc.

The resistors failed and they pulled the plug.

It would be funny if the situation were not so grave.

I think we might get a senate enquiry over this.

What for? Who could be pinned to the wall for potentially unconscionable behaviour? Apart from maybe how they are going to pay out the benefits of the employees, which will never be fully covered anyway. But DSE isn't one of those companies that is, largely, "too big to fail", so I can't imagine this being anywhere on the government's radar.

Having toured the AAD in Hobart last year, the krill researcher painted a pretty bleak picture. Krill are the basis of the entire ocean ecosystem, they are working really hard to discover whether krill can cope with the changes. Those concerns were not whether krill could adapt to change but whether they could handle the rate of change.

Oh my goodness. First wine, then coffee and now back to global warming.

Golf is a lot more fun. Even if you drink a wine or coffee afterwards.

In your opinion. Personally I find hitting my hand with a hammer more fun than golf, even when drinking a beer on the course.

There used to be glaciers at Hallett Cove Sth Aust in the Permian era. Heck, before mankind dared walk on the planet. Damn Gondwanaland and pesky continental drift.

Rate of change! Did that glacier disappear in 100 years?

Contrary to popular belief in some quarters coral grows/regenerates quicker in warmer water. There have been a number of studies confirming this over the last decade which prove that coral reefs don't get killed off by warmer sea water at all, as many climate scientists falsely claim. Here's one quote below - there was another one published last year (which I can't find just now) done on coral off the coast of WA which showed how beneficial warmer water is for coral (if it is, in fact, warming).

How Coral Reefs Grow | Coral Reef Alliance
"Coral reefs grow best in warm water (70–85° F or 21–29° C). Corals prefer clear and shallow water, where lots of sunlight filters through to their symbiotic algae. It is possible to find corals at depths of up to 300 feet (91 meters), but reef-building corals grow poorly below 60–90 feet (18–27 meters). Corals need salt water to survive, so they grow poorly near river openings or coastal areas with excessive runoff."

The stuff I've heard about this is the issue is more moving the layer of water with the optimum conditions away from the current coral

Nah, it's really a question of sticking to the facts. Bleached coral on the Great Barrier Reef that we were told could never recover because of acidification has been recovering steadily. Significantly, nature is doing quite a good job of repairing the damage which is primarily caused by star fish and storms.

Oceans not acidifying – “scientists†hid 80 years of pH data « JoNova

The alleged fraud was uncovered by Mike Wallace, a hydrologist with nearly 30 years’ experience now working towards his PhD at the University of New Mexico. While studying a chart produced by Feely and Sabine, apparently showing a strong correlation between rising atmospheric CO2 levels and falling oceanic pH levels, Wallace noticed that some key information had been omitted.
Mysteriously, the chart only began in 1988. But Wallace knew for a fact that there were oceanic pH measurements dating back to at least 100 years earlier and was puzzled that this solid data had been ignored, in favour of computer modelled projections.

That's a pretty poor link. Limited detail about the data wallace found to assess its validity. For example are all those measurement made at the same place, are they averages of all the measurements made in a given year. How was natural ocean variability corrected. I'm not questioning the figure, just saying that it isn't presented in a rigorous scientific way. More about petty point scoring it seems.

but even that is more fun than golf...

I didn't think third party insurance covered second parties.

Sounds like fun. Can you please do that 100 times and post the photos?

Seems like the only people who don't think golf is fun are the people who can't play golf. But that's good. Golf courses were getting overcrowded. Don't want to waste time playing behind a group who have no idea....

I get sick of my accountants letter each year when ASIC returns are due warning me that Directors cant sign if trading while insolvent.

The thing that sucks here are the gift cards they promoted before Christmas. If that isn't unconscionable, well, I dunno.

What makes you think I can't play golf? Arrogance? Pride? I play golf at least as well as I play cricket and I enjoy cricket greatly.

I certainly know if you're doing something 100 times in golf you're doing it wrong.

Perhaps a little secret: we had a par 3 hole at school. One of my class mates left school early to join the pro tour somewhere, and was still a registered professional only a few years ago at the school reunion. I have had the chance to swing a club a few times from year 10 onwards. I did used to enjoy the night golf when I lived in remote australia.

Even if they can pin someone to the wall about the gift cards, who are they going to go after to get the money? The administrators? Fat chance. Throw the DSE CEOs in jail? Might give some justice; certainly won't give those gift card people their money back.

I think Nick Aboud is sweating at the moment.

Nick Aboud the former CEO of Dick Smith is back working with the guys from Anchorage Capital however insiders in Mosman where he lives in a palatial waterside property, say that he has become deeply concerned with what ASIC and various investigators are discovering.

Several people have concluded that the statutory disclosures at the time of the acquisition simply do not reconcile - and there is therefore scope for regulators to act without waiting for six months.

Michael West writing for Fairfax Media claims that questions need to be answered about the actions of Dick Smith and Anchorage management.

Why does Anchorage extol the value of the Dick Smith brand in the prospectus when it has not recognised an asset for that brand at acquisition date?

Why would Woolworths sell the Dick Smith business for $115 million if Anchorage and its auditors, Deloitte, reckoned the fair value was $261 million?

Why did Woolworths earn another $118 million for "administration" costs in the Dick Smith changeover? Is there a conflict of interest when Deloitte, the auditor of Woolworths, is also appointed as Anchorage's auditor and investigating accountant for the prospectus?

...

That still doesn't really help the people who have "worthless" gift cards, viz. they likely won't get their money back (unless they purchased their gift cards from other retailers other than DSE).

It might put a dishonest imbecile behind bars, where he belongs, though like most "good" white collar crooks, they usually get another chance to operate a business.

Is that the same as saying that people who don't like wine or coffee must not have taste buds??
You could be right there.

It's not that I don't like wine or champgane. I don't understand the obsession. Who cares if this cabernet sauvignon has a taste of citrus. Or apple? Or is not fruity enough? Why go into so much detail? But I guess I will never understand.

Golf is not the same. You don't need to be good to love golf. But if you are good there's a 99.93456% chance you'll love golf more.

I know. It sucks. But sometimes justice needs to be done when all else fails.

Myer was/is a good indicator for these "cut and paste" floats..

Myer float sinks on day one

INVESTORS in the Myer float lost $205 million yesterday after Australia's biggest public listing in two years fell victim to one of the worst days on the stockmarket since the recovery began in March
Hasn't stopped since...

I loved my Mirage. Manage to sell it for $7500 when it was 10 years old.

My 1996 323i E36 Beemer cost the original owner (not me!) close to $70,000, it's now got about 120,000km on it, never been down a dirt road, everything still works and I be lucky if I get $2,000 for it.
