Not in my case - my father (b.1926) was an expert with the slide rule! He had a beautiful leather encased slide rule that was produced many a time to demonstrate my inability with logs etc.
It was fun to use but really seems crazy now :)

Just wondering if anyone has heard of a practice where an employer (hospitality) collects tips, divvys them up and pays to employees bank accounts along with their wages, including on their payslips and deducting tax along the way?

Is there an ATO requirement to do this?

There is an ATO requirement to declare ALL sources of income....So yes.

I would think that a lot of tips are paid via credit card, so it would appear in the merchant account of your employer. If so there is no way of (easily) reconciling in an accounting sense any other way.

Isnt it fun paying tax. Think of all the essential services like health education and welfare benefits you are helping to pay and the extra frequent flyer points awarded to the customer by paying tips with their CC.

As I an unable to have a cash business, i want everyone else to pay tax on their cash incomes.

Yes, I've seen this, but it was rare. Although as Quickstatus suggested, it was usually only for tips paid via credit card. Cash was divided nightly. It has been quite a while since I've worked in hospitality. But, friends who are still in the game, suggest it is much more commonplace now.

Aaaah, the good old days. Pre TFN....showing my age here, but in hospitality it was the boom times. When PK introduced the TFN system, overnight there was a huge shortage of waiters, chefs, kitchenhands etc.. Everyone went from working 2 or 3 jobs, back to 1. I can remember working with many a John Smith or Paul Brown. Probably more than were in the phone book. (again showing my age)

Travelling to Sydney to go to the Royal Easter Show, I read in the JQ inflight magazine a quiz question about a quote attributed to W. C. Fields:

"I always use wine in cooking. I sometimes add a bit to the food."

Now that is just the way I cook!

The organisers are predicting 120k today at the Easter Show. Today is traditionally the busiest day at the Easter Show.

Fewer discounts around for Easter Show this year than previously (unless you book well in advance). Nrma had one last year but not available now. Off to the show tomorrow

We went on Wednesday 23rd - Seniors Day (we're seniors). Good attendance but not as crowded as last year's Chelsea Flower Show in London. I hadn't been to a RES since 1966!

Someone trying to put through $100 charge to my Amex at Officeworks online.

Amex fraud trying to call me. Sent email. Sent sms. Replied to sms and automated system sends same sms. The card hasn't been out of wallet in Thailand as I use 28 degrees.

Interesting.

It's great to know the bank has got your back at least for these matters. I always call the bank to let them know if I'm travelling.

Risotto is a dangerous dish for the cook!

That's a good idea although I have stopped calling them as I don't use card overseas.

A $100 charge to Officeworks online followed by $50 charge on 22 March. Then they tried again on 24 March.

Filthy low lifes. Card is now cancelled.

P.S. What are they buying? E-gift cards to use elsewhere?
