Thought I'd give the method a go tonight for the Edge. Well, it appears they've changed their process.
Skipped and went to the long application. As soon as I entered my details and went "Save and Continue", system did a credit check straight away. I proceeded to the financials section, then to the Card Options section. I didn't get a second chance to select if I'm an existing card member, oops! I received the "received your application, will get back to you in 5-10 business days message.
If I do get a call over next couple days, I'll most likely cancel my Reserve
