The Velocity Status Run Master thread

Hi,

First time poster, sorry for bursting in with a question.

I've been languishing in Silver for a decade or so but finally appear to be on the verge of Gold. I have 485 of 500 SCs and 17 of 4 sectors flown. (Funny thing is I was looking at the 4 sectors required note in my account and thought it meant four more from where I was currently!)

I've been accumulating points hoping to shout my son a Business Class flight home from LA but he has a girlfriend now and isn't going anywhere.

I joined the Travel Rewards credit card a year or so ago and transferred Fly Buys and have done the BP thing.

My "judgement day" is mid-June and I don't have any trips planned so I'm wondering how I can make up 15 SCs in a month. Should I go somewhere from Perth for no reason for the 15 SCs; or can my wife gift me some SCs; or can I get them by some other means? My wife probably has 80,000 points and presumably some SCs. I guess it would be in her interest to get me to Gold because she is permitted in the Lounge when we travel together right?

Welcome to AFF...

You're wife cannot gift any SC's and mid June is in 2 days so unless you have any flights booked then I don't like your chances. If anyone is your household has flights in the next few days you can use family pooling and have them pool their status credits to you. Other than that you could try and contact VA and see if they will give you Gold considering you are so close. Some AFF members have been successful at this however I think they may have had other flights already booked.

Good luck.

I'd think that you'd be best looking for AKL/(SYD or MEL)/MCY flights to get the best SC earn. Personally, I'd fly to MEL for the better SC earn on the Dom sector and ease of transfer from Intl > Dom terminal.

hey all,

also first time poster and a recent lurker.
been introduced to AMex and points and now also got the free gold velocity membership so trying to keep gold status.
im currently in Auckland for 5 months so will be doing from flights from here.
was about to book the free return flight on Jetstar for $200-NZ but to the Goldy and then realised obtaining the gold status would be better.
was hoping to get back to the Sunshine Coast in August in time for a golf match and also within the 3 months to get the 80 SC.
whats the best route to achieve these points?
AUK>BRIS
BRIS>SUNNY
or maybe flying though Sydney for extra miles with a connected flight?
unfortunately its just under the 1500 miles from NZ to Bris for extra points.
and I noticed Air New Zealand (velocity partner) also has a direct flight to Sunshine Coast, would I receive the same SC with them?
even if I fly domestically in NZ?
just trying to get my head around this.
thanks 4 any tips

Just for reference to others. Got upgraded to WP @ 987 SC and 16 VA Sectors. Was a surprise halfway through my trip as I knew I needed the return trip to complete. I assume this means 60SC credited to my renewal year (Will have to wait and see) as I was upgraded to Plat before that trip.

You'll probably have to wait and see how they process that flight, but it would be nice to push that sector into your new year...even if the dates are in your current year

I gave Virgin a call and gave my best George Clooney impression. They considered bringing my Melbourne to Hobart SCs forward which would leave me 5 points short. They must have looked at my previous flying record and decided "yeah, nah".

I had a similar experience: was at 900 or so SC's and had four upcoming F flights with DL and VX in a day which would've pushed me over the 1000 mark. I had a flight home from LAX-BNE the day after my four DL/VX flights and wanted to be WP for better lounge access so called velocity the day before my DL/VX flights and asked if they could manually process them. I gave her ticket numbers and she did it for me straight away and bumped me up to WP. Best part was I was still at 900 SC and WP so after those 4 flights I was already 230 SC's into my renewal period for WP :D

Found a pretty good status run to get 80SC for ppl based in Melbourne MEL->SYD->OOL on Elevate fare OOL->SYD->MEL on Freedom fare $430 total (with 10% discount code) $5.375 per SC and can manage to do the trip all in one day.

Singapore Airlines has some really well priced flights to Asia at the moment. For example, Shanghai return from Sydney for an incredible $492. The promotions only seem to apply to economy saver tickets which have a fare class of K.

Do I understand correctly that this would still equate to 80 status credits with Virgin?

SYD - SIN (K) = 20 SC
SIN - PEK (K) = 20 SC
PEK - SIN (K) = 20 SC
SIN - SYD (K) = 20 SC

Grand total 80 SC or $6.15 per status credit.

I also don't think the SC earn is anything to be excited about, but the fare is hot.

Was close to locking in PER-PVG via SIN for around $475 return as its cheaper than heading to the east coast, but had the chance to catch up with family on holiday in asia so scored a long weekend PER-SIN-HAN and back for $575 which I was still pretty happy with for SQ travel, although I won't be when it comes to taking a red eye in Y...

Not the greatest SC earn at 140 combined for two of us, but it all adds up.

Yep, hit 985 SC with a week to go and a potential 15 point earn for a flight booked 2 days before the end date that I could no longer take. Sent email. Still waiting. No platinum. I'll make it to WP this year but that's not the point

Heya Folks, I mostly VA nationally, but am looking at a quick trip to see the folks in AKL ex BNE.
Prolly getaway or elevate at best...
Does anyone know of hand what the bne to akl return SC's equals ?

Need 65 for Gold, hoping this will go a way towards this......and I get to say Hi to the Folks ;-)

15 each way in discount economy
30 each way in flexible economy

Hi folks,
Fairly new to this, having not really paid much attention to collecting SC previously - and therefore not really attained anything previously! However, this year I made VA Silver, and I've just been upgraded to Explore Gold through the flybuys offer... so they have now got my attention. I was about 90 SC away from making Gold the hard way, so good timing.
So, the carrot on the stick is that I now need to acquire 80SC in the next 3 months to maintain Gold status.
I'm still working out how to calculate exact Status Credits based on fares. So, feel free to just point me in the right direction here.
I pool my wife's VA membership. We were planning a trip to Cairns, so we could make that trip in the next 3 months.
Is the following correct?
One way SYD > CNS - Gateway = 15 SC; Elevate = 30 SC and Freedom = 45 SC
I ask, as I flew CNS > SYD in May on a Freedom fare, but only gained 30 SC - looks like that should have actually been 45 SC?
Secondly, to get 80 SC in one return trip SYD > CNS, one flight needs to be Gateway and one flight needs to be Elevate = 15 + 15 + 30 + 30 = 90 SC
Is all the above correct??
Or I could go SYD > BNE > CNS to gain additional SC? How does that work?
Thanks in advance...!

No, SYD-CNS is Zone 2, so only 10, 20 and 30 SCs for Gateway, Elevate and Freedom respectively. https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/content/Earn/StatusCredits/ - Second table for Domestic Travel after 30 January 2017.

SYD-CNS is 1226 miles according to their calculator https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/content/Earn/Airlines/mileage-calculator/

So for two of you, you'd only need to book Elevate fares each return. That would be 80 SCs. Check out the Virgin Promo Code thread to find a discount code to apply if you can book 20 days in advance to save some $$s also.

If going via BNE, you would earn the SCs on each leg, so 5 + 10 for Gateway, 15 + 20 for Elevate and 25 + 30 for Freedom fares SYD-BNE-CNS one way.

Thanks for explaining @kevrosmith

That mileage calculator makes it much clearer. I was estimating in KMs in my head! But it's not called airmiles for nothing! Doh!

So would it be worth adding the extra BNE leg, to earn extra SC to go towards maintaining Gold by next year (i.e. 400 SC). Or will my SC be zero'd once I attain 'full' Gold - i.e. after acquiring 80 SC during the 'Explore Gold' 3 mth period?

The day you get credited with full gold status will become your anniversary date. From memory, that's the last day of your 3 month trial... On that day they'll review your status, give you gold for one year, and start counting again from zero.

The SCs will be zero'd for the purpose of Gold requal but would be there to count toward an upgrade to Platinum
Unless I thought I might make Platinum, I'd consider family pooling any extra SCs to a relative before the end of the 3-month period
