The view from my "office"

What are they charging for a Sling these days ?
Think it was the region of $36++ in July. The tiling on the floor of the Long Bar (part of the refurb) gives the bar a different feelin. I preferred the previous timber, realising that this is not where the Long Bar was originally and was moved to this location as a bit of marketing in the past.

Bars over windows very Asia
Very ... remember that I used to climb those as a kid when my mum was chasing me around with a stick for being naughty ... what I didn't realise that was you can only climb so far and you'd have to come down eventually. One does get hungry, you know ... Mum waiting for me to get down, still with the stick in her hand, was indeed frightening 🤣 🤣 🤣

The bars are for security.
Very true ... in India all windows, sometimes even doors have the bars on them for security reasons. There has been many cases reported in the news about how thieves try to pull the bureau closer to the window and try to pry open to steal valuables ... Or even fish wallets or watches or any valuables left on a table closer to the window .. the bars are sometimes made smaller on purpose to prevent stealing from happening .. Not just thieves, but we also have cats/dogs/other animals that might wander into the house if the door or window is left open and without bars

And I will be there next week, hopefully enjoying a Singapore Sling!
In the days before Raffles was redeveloped (notice I didn't say in the olden days 🤣 ), you'd sit out in the garden courtyard and a waiter would come round and take your order. When you wanted a cigar the chap would wheel out the cigar trolley and you'd select one. He'd snip the end off and light it for you. I miss those days.

Monkeys in particular
We’ve never had monkeys in Chennai … but if you lived in a hilly area you’d risk monkeys wandering into your dwelling …

My grandparents used to put a layer of mesh on the window frames to prevent mosquitoes from entering. The mesh doesn’t obstruct air flow, so the room was cool all day with no mosquitoes.

The courtyard remains (of sorts not like in the past) but is much more a casual restaurant/bar now. Was closed for 2 weeks over the time we were there in July but have eaten there in the last. The days of cigars have long gone.

Noice.
Nothing nicer than driving in a newish rental in Europe, cold and raining outside, nice and warm inside.
Which rental company? I have this region on my radar.
Avis It’s German registered though I’m in France. Very last minute and expensive but only for a couple of days

Sane make and colour as our car though probs a different model.😀
It’s a 20i if that means anything

I've rented in NL and received a Luxembourg registered Merc which everyone commented on wherever I went. Funny thing was everyone I know in NL said I was doing alright. "I am renting it you know!"

Useless information from a number plate nerd, EU doesn’t stand for European Union as some may think, it means the plates come from here:

Still haven’t heard from the Germans regarding my speeding fine, very unGerman like. Not sure if I should be concerned or not. :)

There was a great show that followed the refurbishment of Raffles. Like every construction project, it didn't go to plan, and like every refurbishment, not everyone would be happy with the final product.

If you like this stuff well worth watching.

European law says they have to contact you and provide evidence and the fine within 360 (ish) days or it’s invalid.
