The view from my "office"

It's common here to have a box of tissues on tables. In restaurants they may take the place of serviettes.

Same in cheap restaurants in asia !! Rooflyer I noticed the women in your photo all covered up - are they western or local ?

Women are required to cover head/neck/shoulders (but only very loosely) and have at least 3/4 sleeves. Men are required to wear trousers but short sleeve shirts are fine.

It is not oppressive. Iran is remarkably benign. Now that comment is a reflection of an inaccurate stereotype that I am beginning to feel quite guilty and foolish about.

The only time we've been yelled at so far in Iran is at an old house where they are shooting a movie and the guy yelled for quiet!

The shot below is on the highway heading south-east towards Yazd. We've seen lots of this - major divided highways, with lots of trucks - the ones on the other side are going north from the major port (Bandar Abbas) on the Persian Gulf at the Straits of Hormuz - the main conduit from ocean transport to Tehran and also transiting Iran to Turkmenistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan etc.

Two Zoroastrian 'Towers of Silence' (framed by the arches) - they brought their dead up to the circular structures which enclose bare rock, and left them to decompose and be devoured by birds etc, and when picked clean, the bones were put down a hole within the structures - this so they wouldn't pollute the soil with the remains.
