re: The view from my "office"

Its mainly grit on the roads here and salts (not table/sea salt type though) on the footpaths. So the roads turn to muddy and gritty slush. Cars are just muddy and grubby for months. Most leave as is but obviously there is a market for the car-proud (and as TV says ... your car can suffer from the salts).

The wash water I think has a bit of anti freeze in it, but in any event water on the car not a big deal.

Now, let me tell you about when I lived in northern Quebec! (Tabernac!) Minus 30s to minus 40s regularly. Used to wake up to find the car encased in an iceblock if there was freezing rain overnight; carried round a little squirter bottle of alcohol to squeeze into the car lock to clear the ice in there so one could open the door. First thing after getting up would be to go down to the car, turn it on (no remotes then) and let it warm up over breakfast. Block heater at least allowed the car to start. Seats once ripped when the PVC material got frozen brittle; petrol froze in the lines; had to use the ice scraper on the inside of the windshield during driving as your breath froze on it. And so on.

I really shouldn't whinge about Calgary winters :)

It is funny that the remote starters haven't hit OZ yet.... wouldn't it be nice to jump into a car already pre-cooled

Looks like that train driver is scratching his head with the dilemna of which to select - right or left?? Possibly he doesn´t see the oncoming train. :)

If that's where I think it is, it would more likely be, 'head in hands' please don't make me go to midland again.

And indeed he was lucky; he changed ends and had a Thornlie run.

(apparently, the North-South run is the cream pick to be rostered to - up the freeway both directions, and no boom gates with kamikaze drivers to have to worry about, and a lot longer runs between stops)
