The view from my "office"

We have just arrived in Madrid and they have put on a special decoration across the entire facade of the Prado for us.

Ah well, renovations have to happen sometime. And it certainly hasn't turned away the crowds. Just part of the queue

This is on my list for next year. How do I get there?

Fly into either Launceston or Devonport and drive an hour (from Devonport) :

We stayed at The Madsen boutique hotel on the waterfront at Penguin and I can recommend it. $125/night for me. They appear to prefer not to do breakfast - but there is a good breakfast cafe about 50m along the road 'Letterbox' (next to the post Office) that opens at 8am.

At this time of year especially the 'NW Coast' is very scenic - nice and green rolling hills, lots of contented cows munching in the fields, cheese making places on the go, a few wineries etc. @Steady 's back-yard.

REX flies to Burnie (actually Wynyard - which is less than 10 minutes from Table Cape). But QF only flies to Devonport, Launceston and Hobart.

As a "regular" flyer into Devonport /Burnie - let me tell you the QF flight into Devonport is much better ! I make Ron come and pick me up from DPO - those little planes over Bass Strait into Burnie :p:p:p

The size of the queue has been explained due to an overheard conversation. We arrived here yesterday on the Spanish National Day and some of the main attractions like The Prado and the Royal Palace are offering free admission over the long weekend. There is no way I would be joining these sorts of queues so we hope the crowds will be gone by Monday/Tuesday.

Where's your sense of adventure? :D

Definitely fly into Burnie (Wynyard), it will be a notch in your belt.

Have to admit it’s been a few years since I have done so but terrific views of Table Cape when you do.

Thanks for posting this. Back in 1980 I flew into Wynyard and even though I was a novice flyer back then, I was absolutely captivated by the stunning coastline views. I assume that must have been Table Cape??

I agree Pushka. I'm not really a flower person, but as an impressionist fan, I am certainly taken with colour and form and RooFlyer excelled in capturing that with those photos. I must admit that the Tassie east coast did not impress me (swanning_it ducks for cover), but I do definitely want to get back to the north and west coasts.

But they do weigh your carry ons on those Rex flights.Hence my Rex jacket with lots of pockets.
Agreed the views over Table Cape and Rocky Cape NP are fantastic.Rocky cape NP in spring will usually have a display of ground orchids.
But if you are into flowers in spring there is also the rhododendron gardens outside Burnie.

Driving to that you pass a house that has waratahs as their border.looks great.
A bit further outside Devonport is the Tasmanian Arboretum.

You will often see a platypus there.
And around Wynyard the Inglis river walk is an easy scenic walk. And visit fossil bluff.
