Is it from the Nautilus family ?

Usually called "Paper" Nautilus. We get them on the south coast beaches sometimes but seldom in such beautiful condition as they are very fragile.

That one is a really lovely find.

It doesn't look the same way it did when I was a kid swimming there so it can't be right! (That was only 50 + years ago. That might even be my fathers Vanguard parked facing the camera in the middle of the photo.)

Apart from the Vanguard, one of my brothers had a FX Holden (really a 48 -215) and my other brother a mid 1950's Hillman Minx and his eventual wife a mid 1950's Austin A35. But I never got to drive any of them.

I remember those days when the road ran along the edge of the beach - and the crowds were generally greater than now. The old tower was just a box on stilts! No aerial shark patrols back then!

And that pic was obviously taken around noon and the sea breeze was in.

Talking to a bloke from Cambridge Council down there for the action today, he couldn't tell me whether the lifeguards will use the refurbished tower for spotting. It hadn't been used for that purpose for many years as it was not safety-compliant, but it is now.

Maybe it's mainly just an icon.

Anyway, good to see it back. I was also there the day it was taken down and did post it in this thread.

The rooftop BBQ area at our hotel has been closed due to Covid.

Miss H won over the duty manager and just like magic it opened for lunch today.

Father day lunch at Georges in the city, Sanctuary Cove is an institution so we will see…...

I agree. Had some lovely fish from there. Samson’s in Cleveland do a great cod chips and salad (and it’s BYO)

My girlfriend worked for them as a sales rep when they started which is around 50 years ago. She had such a battle, It was so hard for people to understand what this new thingy called a credit card was. I recall another friend coming back from America in the early 70s & pulling out his wallet which cascaded down with cards, earnestly telling us it was the latest big thing, the way we were headed. Nah, we said, that'll never happen......

They wouldn't have been using live rounds out there.

Different at the base where they have the large sand dunes to act as abutments.

The base also has the recreational rifle range for Saturday club shooters in the same precinct. I've fired a few .303 rounds there back in the day - with the odd bullseye.
