The view from my "office"

View of dinner office today - Hamsa, a vegetarian fine dining restaurant in Chennai, India.

A lovely place, peaceful (granted it’s Monday night) and well attentive staff. The manager is a friend of my cousin, so we were accorded a warm welcome, complimentary pappadams and the manager waited on our table today.

It was just me, my sister and my cousin. So a small get together to commemorate my week in Chennai.

Started the evening with some pappdums and a Corn Shorba (soup), followed by some Crispy Chat and Tandoori Paneer. Mains were the Banarasi Aloo curry (baby potato curry) served with Roti and Naan bread and the Chef’s special - coconut rice, mix veg and paneer gravy with salad, pakoras and picketed onion.

The pickled onion were not “pickled” in the sense that we’d know in AU or even India for that matter. The onions tasted too sweet for pickled onions.

The Chef’s special is all the items placed separately and steamed inside of a banana left enclosure. So the flavours of the banana leaf wafts thru the dish in both smell and taste. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

The restaurant has some very intricate and interesting “Aari” work (hand woven using silk thread) all along the walls. Was done very well. My sister runs a business doing “Aari” design for sarees and other traditional women’s clothing, so she thoroughly appreciated the designs that were done on the walls.

The food was definitely delicious and I’d definitely come back next time I’m in MAA. The final bill of A$47 approx for 3 adults for dinner wasn’t bad either.

A good evening, done well :-)

Can’t get any closer because of the crowds? :)
Was in the city yesterday, and tried to catch a train at Green Park station after raiding Hatchards and Waterstones in Piccadilly - what a mistake. Green park only available for people to exit or transit. Had to hike back up to Piccadilly Circus to escape the crowds. A lot of people still delivering flowers so they have set up sites:

Where should the public lay floral tributes?

Visitors are invited to leave floral tributes at dedicated sites in The Green Park and Hyde Park.

You will be asked to remove wrappings from floral tributes. Please consider arriving with the wrapping already removed. Bins will be provided for those unable to do so. You are respectfully asked not to lay tributes outside of the official floral tribute site.

The Green Park Floral Tribute Garden is the principal location for laying flowers near to Buckingham Palace. Any flowers left in the proximity of Buckingham Palace will be sensitively moved at the end of each day to the Green Park tribute site.

Folks are on their way in currently to see a show, hopefully it's not too chaotic! I told them to get off at London Victoria and then walk via Green Park / Buckingham Palace to make their way to the theatre near Piccadilly.

Non-plastic wrapped too, they want compostable and they'll then get relocated as they turn.

View from the road office today. Enjoyed an “auto” ride in the scorching Chennai sun. My sister booked me an Ola auto ride for this trip. One way fare was INR246 and the ONLY way to pay was Cash, no cards accepted. The driver gave us a ring when he was near the address and asked us to pay INR300. We refused and he said that he will cancel the ride. We didn’t budge, and after a few back and forth, he agreed for INR250 (6 rupees more than what was listed on Ola app). Apparently this is very common here. So rest of my family weren’t surprised.

Went to get the cushions changed on my Bose QC35-II.

Got charged INR2811 (roughly A$53) to get both cushions changed. Was able to pre-book and pre-pay for the cushions as they are, supposedly, in demand.

The technician fixed it right on the spot.

The ride back home was also on an Ola Auto, but costed only INR200.

But the best view from the mobile office today was at Lichfield. The Cathedral is impressive and well worth a visit.

But when I saw these Zulu shields I was immediately thinking these will be interesting.

They had the names of locals who had died at Rorke’s Drift and Islandawana that I had seen on our first visit to Africa.

But there was more as across the street was Erasmus Darwin’s home and herb garden.
