We are now in Amersfoort, the centre of the Netherlands as far as surveying is concerned.

X marks the spot of the zero point of the national grid or maybe it is the little marker near the right hand edge of the photo. 8EAEF0BD-0BDD-4A2D-8913-896F35FDE893.jpeg

Amersfoort is famous for its “Amersfoortse Kei", a rock dragged to the city by 400 of its citizens in 1661. They were rewarded for their efforts by a local aristocrat with beer and pretzels!

The rock was buried and only recovered in 1903. It was mounted in its current position in 1954. In the 1970s foreign governments started sending rocks to Amersfoort.

A Swiss rock.

A Turkish rock.

A rock inscribed with the signature of President Tito of Yugoslavia.

And many more, but I didn’t find one from Australia!

Our office for tonight and the two previous nights is under the toucan, the unmistakable signpost of the Valk (=falcon) hotel chain. Someone did not pay attention in biology class!

This is in Leusden, a few km outside Amersfoort.

The view from our office shows the obligatory car park. The photo just shows six of the hotel’s ten Tesla chargers, near the little lake, of which five are in use. Electric cars are becoming mainstream here.

Kadaster is the organisation for registering property title and attached rights, the equivalent of our Torrens title. It also includes registration identification of ships. I guess all title is referenced to this spot.

Indeed, the “Kadaster” is the register of property, including identification information with respect to the survey grid and so to its origin in Amersfoort.

Checking this out I found that X does not mark the spot! The metal bar indicates the x-axis of the system and around the corner of the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Toren is the Y-axis. The origin is actually in the tower right under the tower peak.

A bonus photo to my last post from Coronet Peak. Panorama from the summit, 5,410ft or 1,649m:

Another cracking Queenstown sunrise.

A photo taken from the ski bus by accident, but rather than waste it, I’m assuming @RooFlyer will find it rocks.

Plenty of roadwork going on in central Queenstown, so parking is at a premium.

Yes, they are touching!

And saving the best for last, we’re fortunate to have a rooftop terrace with stunning views of Lake Wakatipu, regular passings of TSS Earnslaw and views across to the Remarkables.
