The Virgin Australia Newbie Questions Thread

Lufthansa is not a Virgin partner.
To add to that, both Lufthansa and Air India are members of Star Alliance but not Virgin/Velocity.
@zeruassiul - If you have a KrisFlyer account (Singapore Airlines is also a member of Star Alliance), you can check if you can use KrisFlyer files to redeem on Lufthansa or Air India, and then transfer your Velocity points to KrisFlyer for booking.

Sorry for the basic question, but can someone enlighten me as to how seat selection (or not) works for Lite fares with SG status?

I understand that before check-in I have to pay for a seat if I wish. However, when check-in opens at 48 hours, can I then select from any open seat no charge?

Yes that's what I found (but not EconomyX)

Lets say I have enough SC to get gold but don't have enough eligible sectors. Does that mean that I will get gold as soon as I get those sectors and can kind of choose when my year of gold starts?

The scenario is like that - if I got 500SC that will expire in a year and I wait for say 11 months before I fly to get missing eligible sectors, will my gold renew date be 11 months + one year from today?

Your review date will be 12 months from the date you get Gold, so if you gain Gold on the 1st December 2024, make sure you have enough status to retain Gold (400) and sectors, on the 1st of December 2025 (12 months later) or you will drop to Silver.
Also note, no sectors are earnt on Lite fares.

You mentioned you have 500 status credits currently, therefore, you will be awarded Gold as soon as you meet the sector requirement, BUT, only if you still have all of those 500+ status credits, as some of them may expire before then, which brings me to my next part.

Keep in mind each of your status credits earnt has its own expiry date, 12 months from the date you earnt each of them. For example, if you gained 20 status credits on the 1st Sep last year (2023) those 20 status credits will drop from your total status credits balance on the 1st September this year.
I say that as I assume you didn't earn all of those 500 status credits at the same time (unless you flew business class with family pooling on double status credits promo).

Yes, you are right - I'm going to get 480 SC from family business trip via partner airline next month and since I got another 40 SC last month I will have around 9-10 months to "activate" my gold when I finally fly required sectors.

This is pretty much what I thought. Thank you for clarification.

Went to do a family points transfer yesterday on their website and it says 'temporarily offline'. Did this only happen recently or has been offline for a while now?

I vaguely recall seeing reward seats for EVA to TPE on Velocity years back, but can't seem to find any available now. Was that simply imagined as some fever dream or were they ever in the same airline alliance / did codeshare?

I always check-in for my flights on mobile app.

Happened to be on laptop trying to check-in via the desktop website, couldn't find check-in option anywhere on the booking. Within 48 hours.

Only if I hit the link from email I could access check-in page.

Can / where is it?

Thanks in advance.

Alternatively, this link takes you to the Check-in page.
Scroll half way down the page and you will see the Check-in Online button

That just takes me to the mobile app bookings page.

I'll try opening your link on laptop to see where it takes me.
Thanks
If you open it on a laptop it'll work, if you open it on a mobile it'll ask if you want to open the link via a webpage or app (click webpage).
At least that's what it does for me.

That then takes you to the same link, just with an extra step :)
If you open it on a mobile, it'll try to get you to open the app instead, but you can force it to open a webpage.

Trying to hedge against flight price hikes for AFL Grand Final. If I book a return flight to MEL on a Flex fare straight off the VA website, am I correct in assuming that for a $99 fee I can get a refund on the ticket price if I cancel my ticket say four days prior to the flight?

Yes

How do promos work with multiple people booking?

There were a "double points with ANA" and "2000 bonus points with VA" promos.
I activated them in my account, booked flights for myself and my wife. Is she also getting bonus points? I'm afraid she would have needed to activate deals in her account too (she didn't) but even in this case I'm not sure.

How do promos work with multiple people booking?
The Terms and Conditions of the 2000 bonus points offer contain this:
Where multiple guests are listed on the same booking, only those guests who satisfy the above Offer criteria are eligible for this Offer.

So it sounds like your wife would also need to have activated the offer.
